Jessie was born June 1, 1915 to Dr. T.S. and Jessie Hannah Farnham Walker of Riceville, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Eyestone and four brothers, Dr. Thomas Gordon, Donald, Robert and Douglas; one sister, Margaret; and W.T. Lauman Jr. Her father, Dr. Thomas Samuel Walker, was the town physician, as was his father Dr. Hugh Thomas Walker before him. Jessie's brother, Dr. T.G. Jessie was born June 1, 1915 to Dr. T.S. and Jessie Hannah Farnham Walker of Riceville, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Eyestone and four brothers, Dr. Thomas Gordon, Donald, Robert and Douglas; one sister, Margaret; and W.T. Lauman Jr. Her father, Dr. Thomas Samuel Walker, was the town physician, as was his father Dr. Hugh Thomas Walker before him. Jessie's brother, Dr. T.G. (Tink) Walker, took over the practice from his father in Riceville. Growing up she enjoyed her pony, golf and tennis. She won the County Tennis Championship while at Riceville High. Jessie graduated from University of Iowa with her Nursing Degree in 1937. In 1938 she married William Tyler Lauman, also of Riceville, and they soon moved to southern California. Jessie and Bill had five children, Gary William, Thomas, John Robert, Pamela Jessie and Christine. In 1958 their marriage ended, and Jessie moved back to Riceville where she became the Riceville Community School District nurse. While she was with the RCSD, Jessie formed the Future Nurses Club, which has inspired many young women to join the medical profession. Through continuous match-making efforts of both the Walker and Cray families, Jessie eventually met Bernard Eyestone of Waterloo. They were united in marriage in 1967, and Jessie moved to Waterloo until they both retired in 1973. Bernard and Jessie moved back to Riceville to take up permanent residency. Summers were spent at the family cabin on Lake Roosevelt in Emily, Minn. surrounded by family and friends. Winters were spent in Magnolia, Texas with family and in Port Aransas, Texas for fishing. Always ready for adventure, she and Bernard travelled to Europe, Hawaii, Canada, Alaska and Mexico. After Bernard passed away in 2005. Jessie, with the help of her family, was able to continue her traveling adventures. Jessie was known as a loving mother – patient, gracious and a very strong lady. She was renown for her homemade bread, caramel pecan cinnamon rolls, hosting dinners and winning at her favorite card game, Hand & Foot. Fishing, canoeing, golfing, camping, boating and eating ice cream cones at Owls 'N Things made summer worthwhile! She was the glue to the family and the last of the six siblings to leave us. Although she overcame cancer twice, she never complained and was always positive. She had the gift of listening, the voice of reason and a non-judgmental attitude. Jessie was a strong Christian and a member of the Riceville Congregational Church since childhood, a member of Eastern Star and the choir. Jessie has left a part of her in each of her family members and is missed by all who knew her. Her memory is honored by her five children, Gary William (Jacquelyn) of Plano, Texas; Thomas of Cypress, Texas; John Robert (Claudia) of Issaquah, Wash; Pamela Jessie (L.C.) Hester of Magnolia; and Christine (Dennis) Leard of Magnolia. She leaves 12 grandchildren, Debbie Powell, Randy (Cindy) Lauman, Susan (Alan) Bailey, Brian Lauman, Regina (Michael) Graziadei, William Lauman, Robert Lauman, Scott Black, Michael (Michelle) Caudill, David (Jennifer) Leard, Jessica Leard and Heather Leilani (Chris) Clark. She leaves 18 great-grandchildren, Tanner and Travis Powell; Emily and Rachel Lauman; Sophie and Alex Bailey; Madison, Morgan, Sarah, Rebecca and Lauren Graziadei; Andrew, Travis, Austin and Logan Caudill; Madison Murphy; Ethan Leard and Gabriel Blacklund. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 29 at 2 p.m. at Congregational Church, 105 E Main, Riceville, Iowa with Dr. Donna Ihns of Lime Springs, Iowa officiating. Following a brief service at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, all are invited for fellowship and refreshments in the church basement. Limes Springs Herald June 25, 2014
