From: Clinton, Iowa Weekly Age, October 10, 1890, Page 4 As popular a German resident of the county as there has ever been, and one widely, known in the eastern part, was the jolly Joe Tietjens, who lived nine miles northwest of Lyons in the heart of as rich a farming country as is in Iowa. Tuesday evening he, in company with a friend named Hansen, came to Clinton to try and locate a man who had sold Hansen a cheap watch representing it to have been a gold hunting case of much value. They found the man was in Clinton and had put his team in a livery stable, so they secured a warrant for his arrest, and on the 10:30 car Mr. Tietjens left for Lyons where his team was in a stable at Mart Zinglemann's, and it was twelve o'clock before he had hitched up his team and started for home. It was a weakness with Mr. Tietjens that he would easily fall asleep when quiet, and this with the fact that he was alone and the hour had come past his bed time, made him drowsy, and it is supposed he fell out of his wagon, as the team shied, while riding along the road, for the blacksmith at the two mile house, west of the city in going to his shop Wednesday morning found the team standing in front of his shop with the dead body of the owner lying fast in the wheels where it had doubtless been for several hours. It is believed life was extinct from the time of the fall for his neck was broken. Mr. Tietjens had lived at the village which he built up and which took his name, for a number of years. It is located five miles northwest of the four mile house, and consists of the fine Tietjens residence, his agricultural implement warehouses, blacksmith, wagon and paint shops, a store or two, tavern, and several residences, while Mr. Tietjens got a Postoffice established there of which he was postmaster. Mr. Tietjens had accumulated considerable money and was the leading mind of this neighborhood, being widely known and popular, and few are the politicians who have asked for offices that have not visited his place when hunting votes. Getting out too much paper on agricultural implements he became financially embarrassed a few years ago, and had not fully recovered from his loss. He leaves a widow and six children grown. The funeral will occur Saturday at 10 o'clock A. M. Died: October 8, 1890. Jochim Tietjens along with James Morrison had a Patent having invented certain new and useful improvements in Windmills in 1879. He was the son of Hans H. and Antje Rohwedder Tietjens. About 1859 he married Christina Knapper. Their children: George, Emma, Elizabeth, Ida, Caroline, Albert, Augusta, Louis, Oscar, and Robert.
