Description	:	Joan Marie Herke, daughter of Wilbur and Margaret (Roy) Schnell, was born in Milford, Iowa on September 19, 1938. She passed away due to complications from to a recent stroke, on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville, at the age of 81 years. Read More	Joan Marie Herke, daughter of Wilbur and Margaret (Roy) Schnell, was born in Milford, Iowa on September 19, 1938. She passed away due to complications from to a recent stroke, on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville, at the age of 81 years. Joan graduated from Graettinger High School. On August 3, 1958 she was united in marriage to Willard Herke in Terril, Iowa. The couple made their home east of Graettinger, where they farmed the land and raised livestock. Joan began working as a secretary in the Graettinger School after her children were in school and continued to until her retirement in 2002. The couple wintered in Mission, Texas for many years. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger and active on the ladies’ guild. She was very active in the Graettinger community serving on many boards throughout the years, more recently as board member of the Graettinger Community Housing Board. Many days you would find Joan out at the Hillcrest Golf Course, golfing and getting together with her friends and family. She also enjoyed sewing, creating many dresses and quilts for her dear friends and family. In 2015, Joan and Willard served as Grand Marshals for the Graettinger Labor Day Parade. Joan is survived by her husband of 61 years Willard of Graettinger; her children Scott Herke of Graettinger, Mick (Jan) Herke of Ankeny, and Kurt Herke (Steve Kampa) of St. Paul, Minnesota; and her five grandchildren Marshall (Jessica) Whitney, Morgan Whitney, Jack Herke, Eric Herke, and Allie Herke. She is also survived by her siblings: Darrel (Jayne) Schnell, Darvin (Marilyn) Schnell, Laverne "Bud" (Joyce) Schnell, Marlene (Wayne) Taylor, Don (Sandy) Schnell, Keith (Cathy) Schnell, Dale (Gabi) Schnell, and Judy (Rod) Hoffmeyer; her sister-in-law, Wilma Refsell; brother-in-law, Richard Herke and his wife, Rose; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. Joan is preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter Connie Herke.
