CONRAD KOCH DIES DECEMBER 31 Death Ends Long Illness; Was Seventy-Three Years of Age J. Conrad Koch departed this life on December 31, 1935, after an extended period of illness. At the time of his death he was at Hot Springs, Thermopolis, Wyo., seeking relief from the force that assailed his life. He reached the age of 73 years, 1 month, 21 days. Mr. Koch, eldest son of Jacob and Barbara Koch, was born on November 19, 1862, in Muehlhousen, Germany. Coming to America with his parents at the age of five, they settled in Cook county, Illinois. When thirteen they came to Nebraska and homesteaded in Howard county, near Boelus, where he grew to young manhood. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith before coming to this country, and attended the Methodist church while in Howard county. His mother passed away when Conrad was eighteen, and because money was scarce, his father went west to help build railroads, leaving him in charge of the farm, and to care for three younger brothers and a sister. On January 31, 1888 he was united in marriage to Emma Pritchau at St. Paul, Nebraska, and his home was blessed with six children. His wife passed away July 15, 1902, leaving him alone once more with a family of small children. Six years later, on October 15, 1908, he was married to Mrs. Eliza Stark. Most of his life Mr. Koch spent on a farm. One year spent in Oregon, but ill health urged him back to Nebraska, where he resumed farming in Sherman county. In 1927 he and his wife retired from active farm life and took up their residence in Loup City, where he remained until his death. Mr. Koch was caretaker of the Evergreen cemetery for seven years, but last spring he was forced to resign. For three years prior to his death, he had been in ill health, having occasional severe heart attacks, but he was a patient sufferer and though ready to answer the final summons, he spared no efforts to conquer his sickness. On December 8 he was taken to Thermopolis, Wyo., accompanied by his wife and son Alvin. While there his condition rallied, and he rejoiced to think he would live to see the new year, but before the end of the old year, a severe heart attack brought his earthly life to a quiet close. Those who mourn his death are his loving wife and one daughter, Hilda Johnson of Cheyenne, Wyo.; four sons, Walter of Bingham, Nebraska; Elmer and Alvin of Lakeside, Nebraska, and Herbert of Greenland, Colo. There are four step children, Herman Stark of Loup City, Max, Laura and Fred Stark of North Platte. He leaves seventeen grand children and two great grand children. He has three living brothers, William of Orland, California, Jake and Carl of Johnstown, Nebraska. Besides these, a host of friends mourn his departure. He was preceded in (death by) his parents, four brothers, and two sisters. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, January 7, and interment was made in the Evergreen cemetery. Rev. Burkle and Rev. McCue had charge of the funeral services at the Presbyterian church. Pall bearers were Paul Heisner, Gus Lorentz, Lawrence Lofholm, Joe Thompson, Wm. Wharton and C. J. Tracy.
