Johann Heinrich Krohnke was born February 26, 1851, in Marne, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Hans and Anna (Bargmann) Krohnke. He immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1868, and settled on a farm near Davenport, where he worked until he was able to rent 60 acres to farm for two years. He bought a thresher and in 1875, moved to Crawford County where he threshed and broke new land. He broke the prairie land upon which the county poor farm was formerly located. In 1888, he bought 80 acres to add to the acres he owned. He married Anna Margaretha Suckstorf on November 2, 1876, in Denison. They were the parents of five children. He acquired an interest in the Schleswig meat shop and in 1902, he retired from farming and moved to Schleswig. Anna preceded him in death on April 16, 1915. He was a well known and respected resident. He used the name Henry during his lifetime. Surviving are one son, John Krohnke, of Schleswig; two daughters, Augusta (William) Bumann and Mattie (William) Bielenberg, both of Schleswig; five grandchildren; two brothers, Jurgen and Claus Krohnke; and one sister, Mrs. John Petersen of South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one daughter, Amelia Krohnke and one son, Claus Krohnke. The Schleswig Leader, Apr 19, 1917
