Description	:	John Thoma, for twenty years a resident of the French Grove settlement, and for nearly twelve years teacher in the parochial school there, died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs Herman Schwartz, in Des Moines, Monday afternoon. Hemorrhage of the brain was the cause of his death. He had been in usual health for a person of 81 years, but on Sunday his granddaughter noticed that he had been stricken and his decline from that time was rapid. Hemorrhage of the brain was the cause of his death. He had been in usual health for a person of 81 years, but on Sunday his granddaughter noticed that he had been stricken and his decline from that time was rapid. John Thoma was a native of Germany, where he was born May 27, 1831. He came to America when he was twenty years of age and attended college at Buffalo, New York, for a number of years. When he was twenty-seven years of age he was married and immediately moved to the French Grove settlement, north of town, where he resided until about twelve years ago and where his wife died about eight years ago. While he was here he was engaged as teach in the parochial school of the French Grove Lutheran church, which position he gave up a dozen years ago on account of failing health and moved to Des Moines where he made his home with his children. Mr and Mrs Thoma were the parents of twelve children, five of whom are living. They have Mrs H F Oehlsen of this place; Mrs Christian Davis who lives in California; Mrs Herman Black and Mrs Schwartz, both of Des Moines and Mrs E A Fricke, of this place. Funeral services were conducted at the French Grove church yesterday morning at 10 o'clock by Rev Henry Markworth. Interment followed in the church burying ground. November 21, 1912 State Center Enterprise.
