Johanna Koch, daughter of Christian and Dorthy Koch, was born in Steinfelde, Altmark, Germany, April 18, 1851, where she grew to young womanhood. On February 1, 1878, she was united in marriage with John Kaelke in Germany. In 1881 she and her husband came to America and settled in Remsen, Plymouth county,Iowa. After three years' residence there they moved to North Platte, Nebr., where they took a homestead and lived for fifteen years, enduring the privations and hardships of those early pioneer days in a newly settled country. In 1900 they returned to Plymouth county and located on a farm a few miles east of Akron. In 1908 they retired from active farm life and moved to Le Mars, and then moved to Akron in 1918, this since remaining her home. To this happy union five children were born to bless their home, four of whom survive their mother. Mrs. Kaelke united with the German Evangelical church in Le Mars in 1900, and after coming to Akron she united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she was a faithful member, always attending all its services as long as her strength would allow. She was a very devout Christian, and Christ was to her the reality of realities and a friend in all of life’s trials. She was a loving wife and mother and a kind and helping neighbor. Although she had been in poor health for over a year, she was a very patient sufferer and was always thoughtful of those about her. She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Herman Kaelke, of Le Mars, Iowa, Louis and August Kaelke, of Akron, and Mrs. Minnie Waterbury, of Akron; her twin sister, Mrs. Sophia Huebner, of Akron; 16 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1924, and also by three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the Mrs. Sophia Huebner home and in the M. E. church, conducted by Rev. J. F. Moore, and were largely attended. Favorite hymns were sung by a quartet, comprised of Enida Snyder, Eunice Burket, Edward Stinton and Dr. G. H. Wooton. The pallbearers were Ernest Allen, H. H. Wetzeler, Wm. Simeon, Max Pollock, Floyd Peck and Arthur Bellwood. Interment was in Riverside cemetery. Those present from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Morgan and Wallace Kaelke, of Camp Crook, Omaha, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Reeves, of Seney, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kaelke and Newton and Elna, of Le Mars; Wm. Jeffers, Mr. Ronshausen and son, of the Holiness Mission, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Walsh, of Sioux City.
