She married Henricus Brus in 1857 and they had seven children. Henricus passed away in 1887 in Germany and a year later, Johanna went to America with all her children. Johanna and family first... She married Henricus Brus in 1857 and they had seven children. Henricus passed away in 1887 in Germany and a year later, Johanna went to America with all her children. Johanna and family first emigrated to Davenport, Iowa. Johanna and children followed the railroad out to Hay Springs, Nebraska (the end of the line at that time). Johanna eventually moved into a two-room sod house, which her son-in-law, Theodor Roes built. She filed for a Homestead Exemption on three-quarters of land. Later she abandoned the homestead to return to Ionia, Iowa, where her daughter Ida and husband, Hubert Testroet lived. Some of the children stayed in Nebraska.
