März in Beatrice, Nebr., Johann Heinrich von Steen sen. im Alter von 80 Jahren und 40 Tagen on Asthmabeschwerden. Er wurde geboren in Langfuhr, West Preußen den 22. Januar 1823, vom Ältesten Jakob Mannhardt am 9. Juni 1839 in der Mennonite Kirche zu Danzig, West Preußen getauft. Er wanderte im Frühjahr des Jahres 1877 in Gesellschaft vieler andrer Glaubensgeschwister nach Amerika, woselbst er in Beatrice, Neb. sein Heim gründete. Vor 20 Jahren ging sein liebes Weib ihm voran in die Ewigkeit. Die Beerdigung fand statt Freitag, den 6. März. unter großer Teilnahme. Nachdem Ältester Gerhard Penner im Trauerhause ein Gebet gehalten und der Gesangchor ein Lied gesungen, fand eine englische Leichenfeier statt in der neuen Mennoniten Kirche in Beatrice (welche der verstorbene mitbauen geholfen hatte) woselbst derselbe durch sein leutseliges und liebes Wesen sich viele Freunde und Bekannte erworben hatte unter der amerikanischen Bevölkerung, die trotz des schlechten und unfreundlichen Wetters sich zahlreich einfanden, ihm ein letztes Lebewohl zu widmen. Br. H. P. Krehbiel von Newton, Kans. leitete dieselbe in der englischen Sprache, indem er zur Einleitung verlas: Offenbarung 7, 9 bis 17, und 22, 1 – 5 und sein Text nahm aus 1. Kor. 15, 26: "Der letzte Feind, der aufgehoben wird, ist der Tod." Nachdem der Gesang "Asleep in Jesus" verklungen war, begab sich der Leichenzug auf den Weg zur Grabstätte, welcher sich an die große Kirche 4 Meilen westlich von der Stadt, nördlich anschließt. Zuvor richtete Ältester Gerhard Penner, in derselben, in deutscher Sprache an die Trauerversammlung Worte des Trostes und christlicher Liebe und Ermahnung, gegründet auf das Schriftwort: 1. Kor. 3, 11: "Einen andern Grund kann niemand legen, außer dem, der gelegt ist, welcher ist Jesus Christus." — Der Verstorbene hatte sich selbst bei Lebzeiten folgenden Gedenkspruch gesetzt Titum 1, 2: "Auf Hoffnung des ewigen Lebens, welches verheißen hat der Gott, der nicht lüget, von ewigen Zeiten." Des Dahingeschiedenen Wunsch oftmals im Leben ausgesprochen: "Der liebe Gott wolle mich vor langem und schwerem Krankenlager bewahren, damit ich meinen Kindern nicht zur Last fallen möge," hat Gott der Herr ihm erfüllt. Er hauchte seinen letzten Atemzug aus, nachdem er noch 2 Stunden vorher aus dem Bett aufstand um zu inhalieren. Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herrn sterben von nun an. The 3rd of March in Beatrice, Nebraska, Johann Heinrich von Steen Sr. at the age of 80 years and 40 days on asthma symptoms. He was born in Long Fuhr, West Prussia, baptized by Elder Jacob Mannhardt on 9 June 1839 in the Mennonite Church in Danzig, West Prussia 22 January 1823. He wandered in the spring of 1877 in the company of many of other brothers and sisters to America, where he in Beatrice, Neb. founded his home. 20 years ago, his dear wife preceded him into eternity. The funeral was held Friday, March 6. with great participation. After Elder Gerhard Penner held a prayer in the house of mourning and the singing choir sang a song, an English funeral was held in the new Mennonite Church in Beatrice (which had helped the a builder of deceased) woselbst same purchased with his affable and sweet nature, many friends and acquaintances had among the American population that are homed in number despite the bad and inclement weather to pay him a last farewell. Br HP Krehbiel of Newton, Kans. initiated the same in the English language, by leaving to the introduction: Revelation 7, 9 to 17, and 22, 1-5 and took his text from 1 Cor. 15, 26: "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." After the song "Asleep in Jesus" had died away, the funeral procession went on the way to the tomb, which adjoins the large church four miles west of the city, to the north. Previously taught Elder Gerhard Penner, in the same, in German language to the mourners words of comfort and of Christian love and admonition, based on the scripture: 1 Cor. 3, 11: "For no other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." - The deceased had set itself in the lifetime of the following commemorative award Titum 1, 2: "In hope of eternal life, which has promised to the God who can not lie, from time immemorial." Of the deceased desire often expressed in life: "God wanted to save me from long and severe sick-bed, that I may not be a burden to my children," the Lord God has met him. He breathed his last breath after a further 2 hours before getting up from the bed in order to inhale. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from now on.
