(Source: Illinois, County Marriage Records) ============================================= The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, March 8, 1945 John Seefeld, the son of Ludwig and Wilhelmina Seefeld, was born near Brandenburg, Germany, September 18, 1857, and departed this life from his home in Nelson, Nebraska, on February 28th, 1945, having reached the age of 87 years, 5 months and 10 days. He came with his parents to America when he was ten years old, and they located at Kewanee, Illinois, and there he lived for 26 years. On September 4th, 1881, he was united in marriage with Miss Johanna Schuman (sic) in Kewanee. He and his wife moved to Beatrice, Nebraska, in the year 1884 and nine years later in the year 1893, they moved to Nelson, locating on a farm north of town, where they lived for 25 years. They left the farm in 1918 and moved into Nelson, this being their home ever since. Mrs. Seefeld preceded her husband in death January 15, 1939. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Seefeld there were born five children, four of whom are living. They are Miss Louisa Seefeld of Nelson, Mrs. Mamie Rogers of Kansas City, Kansas, Charlie of Guide Rock, Nebraska, and Nellie May of Nelson. A son William, died at three months of age. Besides the four living children, Mr. Seefeld leaves ten grand children and five great grand children. One of his grandsons is with the armed forced is Luxemburg, Germany. Mr. Seefeld was one of twelve children and only one sister survives, Mrs. Anna Statz of Nelson. Some of the finest citizens Americ (sic) has had have come from our brother's native country and he like many others has made a rich contribution to the land of his adoption. Mr. Seefeld was confirmed in the German Lutheran church in Kewanee, Illinois. When the Pleasant View United Brethren Church north of Nelson was being builded (sic) he was one of the workmen and gladly and graciously gave many hours of labor so that the people in that vicinity might have a church in which to worship God. When the need for a school house arose in that locality he contributed the land and the Pleasant View school house was built. Mr. Seefeld loved the farm and the great out of doors. He was especially fond of farm animals and they found in him a friend. He was always a home loving man and he enjoyed his home and family above all else. We believe these words, "The Pilgrim Way," by John Ovenham, appropriately fit his life: But once I pass this way, And then - and then, the silent Door Swings on its hinges - Opens.........Closes - And no more I pass this way. So while I may, with all my might, I will assay sweet comfort and delight To all I meet upon the Pilgrim Way, For no man travels twice - The Great Highway That climbs through darkness up to light, Through night - to day. Funeral services were conducted from the Klawitter mortuary (sic) at 2:30 p.m. March 2nd, by Rev. Clarence V. Powell. Mrs. Bertha Portwood, Mrs. James Murphy, Ed Portwood and James Murphy sang. Mrs. Henry Hite presided at the piano. The body was laid to rest in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
