John Arthur Fenlon, born near David City, graduate of the David City high school, some years ago a teacher in the David City public schools, died in Omaha Saturday afternoon from dilation of the heart resulting from acute gastritis. He was ill but a few hours. He was stopping at the Hotel Hill in Omaha, became ill there, became delirious, and medical attention was not obtained. In the care of the hotel, property of Mr. Fenlon, there was money in amount of $175.00 and bank certificates of deposits amounting to $1200.00. He owned a farm of 240 acres near Winner, S. Dak., in which town he had taught school several years ago. He carried $2000.00 life insurance. Mr. Fenlon was not married. At time of his death Mr. Fenlon was superintendent of schools at Minot, N. Dak., and had been re-elected for the coming school year. He had taught successfully at various places in North Dakota and South Dakota. Born July 10, 1878, on the homestead in Franklin township, 2½ miles east of David City, where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Fenlon, settled in 1871, John Arthur Fenlon grew to manhood there. He attended the David City high school, graduating therefrom in the class of 1895. Before becoming a student in the University of Nebraska, he was a teacher in the David City schools, in charge of the Eighth Grade, elected to that position because of his ability as a discplinarian in addition to his other qualifications. He completed the course in civil engineering in the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1907. Prominent in athletics in the University of Nebraska, he was a member of the varsity football team and of the varsity track team, winning distinction in football and as a sprinter. His ability in and liking for athletics led him into professional baseball. He played with Omaha, Lincoln and Sioux City in the Western league, led the league in hitting for three years, and was a member of the pennant-winning Sioux City teams of 1909 and 1910. From the Western League he went to the American Association league and helped Louisville, Ky., win a pennant. He was drafted from the Louisville team of the American Association by the Cleveland team in the American League, but did not report for play, he returning to teaching. Mr. Fenlon was a member of St. Mary's church in Omaha and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Arrangements for the funeral and burial at David City were made by E. J. Dworak, a friend of the Fenlon family for many years. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Father Paul, in absence of Rev. Father Sproll, were held in St. Mary's Catholic church, David City, Tuesday morning, Aug. 3, at 9 o'clock. The pallbearers were Frank Birkel, Mike Danaher, B. H. Eiting, Arthur Evans, Herman Ficke and Peter Vanderheiden. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery, in the Fenlon family lot, where Arthur Fenlon's parents' graves are, and that of his brother, Peter Fenlon. Surviving Arthur Fenlon are three brothers, Nicholas Fenlon of David City, T. F. Fenlon of Sioux City, Iowa, and George Fenlon, of Dawson, N. Mex., superintendent of schools there, and one sister, Miss Julia Fenlon of Amarillo, Tex. They were in attendance ata the funeral. Dan Kavanaugh of Omaha, a nephew of Arthur Fenlon, Miss Genevieve Kavanaugh and William Kavanaugh, of Winner, S. Dak., niece and nephew of Arthur Fenlon, came to attend the funeral, also Mr. and Mrs. H. J.
