FENLON After a lingering illness of about a year, Peter Francis Fenlon passed away at his home on Thursday evening, September 20, 1917 at 11:30. Mr. Fenlon was born in Durand, Illinois, April 27, 1856, where he grew to be a young man. In 1871 he came to Nebraska with his parents and settled on a homestead, two miles east of David City. He attended school in David City for several years after which he was employed in Sam Drew's general store for twelve years, in this city. For the next two years he was in a general store here with Mr. John Gross as his partner. On November 14, 1885, he was married to Miss Frances Flynn in St. Mary's church of David City. After disposing of his store he moved to York, Nebraska, and was employed in Woods Brother's store for one and a half years. He then came back to David City in 1891 to travel for Groneweg and Schontgen Wholesale Grocery House of Council Bluffs, Iowa, having the South Platte territory. He was with these people for twenty-four years. He was a member of the Nebraska Legislature in 1905 and 1906. His last year he traveled for Aps Co of Columbus. Mr. and Mrs. Fenlon had born to them three children, Adena Fenlon Boschert, of Ballentine, Montana, Walter E. Fenlon of Garrison, and Gerald Fenlon, of this city. Mr. Fenlon was one of eleven children born to Nicholas and Mary Fenlon, six of whom are living, James and Arthur Fenlon of Clearfield, South Dakota, Thomas Edward Fenlon of Sioux City, Iowa, George L. Fenlon, of Dawson City, New Mexico, Nicholas Fenlon of Bellwood, Nebraska, and Miss Julia Fenlon of Happy, Texas. Two children died in infancy, William at the age of twenty-eight and Mrs. Mary Kavannaugh at fifty-seven. Mr. Fenlon had been in very poor health, a sufferer from a cancer on his neck since last October, being confined to his home since May 1st. He was a consistent and devout member of the Catholic church and had great faith in his master. The funeral services were held from the St. Mary's Catholic church, Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock, Rev. Father Boll conducting them, assisted by Father Mock and Father Collan. The music was rendered by the St. Mary's school choir, singing only, "Nearer My God To Theee." The honorary pall bearers were E.W. Wright, G.W. Gates, Matt Miller, William Taylor, and August Miller of this city and Bernard McNally of Ulysses. The active pall bearers were John Keefe, Frank Kirby, Leo Pryor, Pete Vanderheiden, E.J. Dworak and B. Eiting. The body was laid away in the St. Mary's cemetery south of town. The relatives and friends from away were T.E. Fenlon and son, Francis of Sioux City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Fenlon of Massina, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Flynn of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Flynn and family of Ulysses, Mrs. Jennie Bird, of Clark, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Kavannaugh and daughter Katherine of Fairbury, Mrs. Mary Tannigan of Spaulding, Mrs. Adena Boschert of Ballentine, Montana, who has been here for the last four months, Mr. J.M. Kildow of York, Mr. Clint Hice of York, and Mr. A.P. Buckle of Stromsburg. Mr. Fenlon was a member of the Knights of Columbus, A.O.U.W. lodges. He leaves behind him an heritage that his children may be proud of and one that they should follow. He bore his sufferings without complaint and did all he could for the comfort and happiness of others. In the passing of Mr. Fenlon, we lose an old settler and a man to be greatly missed among his many acquaintances. Peace be with him.
