Mrs. Nicholas Fenlon, after being fortified by the rites of the Holy Catholic church, departed this life on May 14th, at 7:30 P.M., at her residence in the northeast part of David City. Mrs. Fenlon was born at Morristown, New Jersey August 23, 1835, and was 78 years, 8 months and 23 days old at her demise. At the age of 6 years she moved west with her parents who settled on a farm in Stevenson county, Ill. In December, 1852, she was united in holy wedlock to Nicholas Fenlon in Winnebago county, Illinois. To this happy union were born ten sons and two daughters. Two of the sons died in infancy, one died at four years of age and another at the age of 22 years. On May 20, 1871 she moved with her family to Butler county, Nebr., and settled on a homestead on section 22, Franklin township, about two miles east of David City. It is unnecessary to relate the hardships of pioneer life in those days, as almost everyone knows, how the early settlers had to struggle to make a living, and the many difficulties, those with large families had to encounter with to provide for their children. In 1887 her beloved husband was called to his reward and the responsibility of managing an estate of 200 acres, besides the care of a family of eight children rested on her shoulders, but being a lady of wise and far seeing ideas, kind, gentle and winning disposition, she succeeded in her undertaking. About five years ago, finding that she was becoming old and that her health was somewhat impaired, she sold her estate divided with her beloved children and moved to David City so as to be convenient to the children. Mrs. Fenlon was a grand and lovable mother, consistent and obedient Catholic, who by word and example did her utmost to instruct and bring up children in fear and love of our dear Lord. When St. Mary's congregation was in its infancy here in David City she, husband and family worked with indefatigable perserverance to help to erect a small church and build up the parish. Thank God, Mrs. Fenlon lived to see their untiring efforts crowned with success, as today St. Mary's is a large, prosperous, well organized and well managed congregation. In her late sickness and death, she had the pleasure and happiness of being surrounded by her six sons, two daughters and one sister from Spencer, Iowa, all anxious to add to her comfort. Her funeral was held from St. Mary's Catholic church Monday the 17th inst. at 10 o'clock A.M. The services consiste of Solemn High Mass, sung by Father Carraher, our resident rector. The Rev. Father delivered a very eloquent and impressive eulogy on the exemplary life led by the deceased, as a model mother worthy of imitation, devout and sterling Catholic. She leaves six sons, and two daughters to mourn their loss. _____ Card of Thanks.
