(Ed) Nelson, a Fillmore county pioneer, passed away at the good Samaritan Village in Hastings, Neb., October 8, 1962, aged 87 years, 2 months and 15 days. He had spent the past several months at Hastings because of failing health. July 23, 1875, in a rural community near Monmouth, Ill., a son, John August Edward, was the first child born to Alfred and Emma Nelson. At the age of four he came with his parents to a farm in Chelsea township, Fillmore county, Nebraska. Here he grew to manhood and resided on the same section of land until he moved to Geneva in 1936. He was married to Tekla Peterson February 1, 1899, at Galva, Ill. Their 50th wedding anniversary was observed just prior to Mrs. Nelson's death, which occurred February 20, 1949. Returning to Nebraska after their marriage, they started housekeeping on the farm on which they resided 37 years. To this union were born three children, Sylvia, Oscar and Verna, who survive, along with three grandchildren, John E. Nelson, Christie Lou Andersen, and Jim Edington. Mr. Nelson is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. E. L. Fox of Geneva, Mrs. Tillie Anderson of Geneva, Mrs. Irene Brainard of Omaha and Mrs. Wilson Miller of Geneva. Mr. Nelson was a life-long member of the United Brethren church, having begun his church activities as a child in the Chelsea church, and he continued that service throughout his life. Ed, as he was known to all his friends, was always willing to help those about him and always wanted the best for his family. He was an industrious, aggressive individual, possessed of courage, ambition and initiative. These traits of character kept him alert and in search of better ways of farming and the raising of livestock. These, however, were not his only interests. As he grew older, he did considerable carpenter and cabinet work, having built his home in Geneva as well as helping in the building or remodeling of many other homes. Determined to remain active, he purchased a saw filing machine and spent many satisfying hours sharpening saws. This work continued well into his 84th years. He loved music and perhaps the proudest moments of his life were those when some member of his family was singing or playing a musical instrument. He also loved poetry; in a collection which he presented to his daughter, his signature was found below the following poem: "Oh, should I live to ninety and be the last to go, How much of hurt and sorrow must then be mine to know! For plain and clear the truth is, all those I love today If I should live to ninety will long have passed away. The price of age is heartache, though mellowing time bestows A sweetness and a calmness the young heart never knows, And who has lived to ninety has many griefs to tell, For he to all his comrades has waved the last farewell. His hopes have all been buried. His early friends have gone And yet he smiles upon us and bravely cheers us on. Oh, should I live to ninety, I pray that I may be As patient and as cheerful and strong of faith as he." Memorial services were held in the Geneva Evangelical United Brethren church at 2 p. m. Wednesday, October 10, with Rev. Fred H. Stevens officiating. Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Willard Foster. Solo numbers, "My Task" and "Going Home", were sung by John E. Nelson. Pallbearers were Arthur Ekwall, Fred Fox, Bill Jacque Sr., Harold McDonald, Alvah Miller and Harold Stiers. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery.
