John Bailey was born about 1800 in Delaware, and married Sarah Weatherly Goddard on 20 September 1824 in Port William, Gallatin County, Kentucky. They arrived in Union township, Des Moines county, Iowa on April 7, 1837. John rented a farm until purchasing 200 acres of public land in 1841. John Bailey was born about 1800 in Delaware, and married Sarah Weatherly Goddard on 20 September 1824 in Port William, Gallatin County, Kentucky. They arrived in Union township, Des Moines county, Iowa on April 7, 1837. John rented a farm until purchasing 200 acres of public land in 1841. He sold that in 1853, and resettled near Mount Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa, where he remained until the death of his wife in 1858. John then moved to the home of his son, P. D. Bailey, in Eliot township, Louisa county, Iowa, where he died in August 1865. John served as Justice of the Peace in Union township. Apparently, John was active in politics, as his views drew the criticism of the Burlington Hawk-Eye editor in 1850. John had a long association with the Badley family; it is possible that they were of the same family. John served as bondsman to the marriage of Mary Badley, daughter of Thomas Badley, to William Graham on 23 September 1825 in Gallatin county, Kentucky. William Badley, and his wife Mary Neff, are buried next to the space where John is thought to be buried at Chandler cemetery. John and his wife Sarah were the parents of 7 children, three of whom preceded him in death and are buried in this cemetery. The oldest known burial in this cemetery is that of his son, Luther M. Bailey. 15 March 2015 - Evidence suggest John may have been born in Little Creek Hundred, Sussex county, Delaware. There were a number of Bailey & Badley families there, as well as a Deshield. John may have been an orphan, and joined other family in Kentucky. Any help in research appreciated.
