FOOTE John B. FOOTE, a resident of Jefferson county for more than half a century, died Friday at the home of a son, Amos, in this city. Death came as the result of old age, and several days before his death he fell into a deep slumber from which he never awakened. Mr. FOOTE was born August 21st, 1821 (sic. August 22, 1821 on his headstone inscription), in Wells Valley, Fulton county, Penn., and the earlier years of his life were spent here (sic. there). In 1854 (sic. also reported as either 1852 or 1853 in two other sources) he was united in marriage to Mary T. HARPER (sic. Mary E. HARPER) at Shade Gap, Penn., and the following year they came to Jefferson county. The took up their residence on a farm nine miles northeast of Fairfield, and here they made their home until fifteen years ago, when they removed to this city. Since the death of his wife a few years ago, Mr. FOOTE made his home with his sons here. Mrs. and Mrs. FOOTE were the parents of five children, three of whom are living - Mrs. E.A. BOWEN, Upland, Cal., and William and Amos of this city. A daughter, Mrs. W.T. MACHES (sic. MACHESNEY), died about fifteen years ago, and the eldest son, Grier, in 1901. Mr. FOOTE was a most excellent man and citizen. Honest, kindly and industrious, he was held in the highest esteem by those who knew him during the many years he passed in this community. Funeral services were held at the home of Amos FOOTE Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. Alex. Corkey, assisted by Rev. J.G. Condit, an old pastor of the deceased. ---------- ---------- Jefferson County Republican July 10, 1903 Pg. 4 Col. 5 John B. FOOTE was born August 22, 1821, in Wells Valley, Fulton County, Penn., and died July 3, 1903, in this city at the home of his son Amos. He was married in 1853 (sic. also reported as either 1852 or 1854 in two other sources) to Mary E. HARPER of Shade Gap, Penn., and in 1854 they came to Jefferson Co., where they settled on a farm nine miles northeast of Fairfield and which was their home until fifteen years ago, when they moved to this city. His wife died two years ago and since that time he has lived with his son Will. Five children were born to this union, three of whom are still living - Mrs. E.A. BOWEN of Upland, Calif., and Amos and Will of this city. The oldest daughter, Mrs. W.T. MACHESNEY, died in 1885 and the oldest son, Grier, in 1901. The funeral was held at the home of Amos FOOTE on Sunday July 5th, at 2:30 p.m. and was conducted by Rev. Alex. Corkey, assited (sic. assisted) by Rev. J.G. Condit. A large attendance of old friends testified to the respect in which the deceased was held. Mr. FOOTE early united with the Presbyterian Church and was an ordained Elder in the Communion. He lived an earnest Christian life. Tuesday of last week John B. FOOTE was at this office and when taking leave from us he put his hand on our shoulder and remarked, "Brother George, we will meet over on that other shore. I am going soon." All knew he was failing fast, but I had no thought that that was our last meeting. He taught the first school we went to in Iowa, we a lad of 12 years in 1857. Since that time we have known him. Always had the highest respect for him. We were friends. He was a working Christian, a Christian at home. The evidence of that is showed in his childrens' training. We shall miss him. A pilgrim at rest. Our acquaintance goes back 46 years. We were friends from our first meeting to the last. FRASHER, and it would seem likely that he was the one who wrote the obituary and put in the personal comments about his relationship and friendship with John B. FOOTE).
