Mr. John Betts, one of Crisfield's oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at the McCready Memorial Hospital, on Friday night last. The deceased, who was 75 years of age, had led a very active life and on Thursday morning came down to the Crisfield Bank to transact some business. While in the bank he was taken suddenly ill and was carried home by Sheriff Luther Daugherty. After arriving home, he grew worse and a physician was called and diagnosed his case as double pneumonia. On Friday afternoon he was removed to the McCready Hospital where he died later that night, after being ill for less than two days. Mr. Betts was born in Wicomico county and in 1870 married Miss Mary A. Bethard of the same county. In 1871 he moved to the Dr. Dennis farm, near Kingston, where he resided until 1875 when he moved to the John Bell farm near Cash Corner. In 1886 he purchased what is known as the Betts home place just over the bridge, near Parsonsville. For a number of years he conducted a large lumber, wood and coal business at Hopewell and in Crisfield and in 1910 he moved to Crisfield and retired from active business. The deceased was well known throughout Somerset county and the Eastern Shore. Of a kind and loving disposition, he was loved and respected by with whom he came in contact and in business life was considered "Four Square." A good conscientious christian gentlemen, he had been a member of the church for many years and leaves many friends who extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. In the death of Mr. John Betts, the family have lost a kind and loving husband and father, the poor of the community have lost a great friend and Crisfield and Somerset county have lost one of their most substantial and progressive citizens. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Betts; six daughters: Mrs. Ross Byrd, Lawsonia, Mrs. William F. Sterling, Mrs. Charles Howeth, Mrs. Martha Sonoma and Mrs. Annie Rawls, of Crisfield, and Mrs. May Swift of Marion, and five sons: L.H., Jno. F., Chas. J., Irvin J., and Columbus C. Betts, all of Crisfield, and 27 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Mariners M.P. Church on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. I. S. Owens, assisted by Rev. J.L. Nichols, conducted the services and interment was made in the family burying ground at the Betts homestead. The five sons of the deceased, with Mr. Chas. W. Howeth, acted as pall bearers.
