Read More	LEVIN HANDY BETTS DIED ON WEDNESDAY Heart Attack Claims Widely Known And Respected Citizen FUNERAL SERVICES TO BE HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON Levin Handy Betts, a widely known and highly respected resident of the community, died suddenly at his home on Mariner's road Wednesday afternoon as a result of a heart attack. Death came at 4:00 o'clock, after he had returned to his home from a shopping trip in town with his wife, and was resting on the porch of his home. He was the son of the late John Betts and Mary Bethard Betts, of this city, and was 68 years of age. Rather a coincidence is the fact that Mr. Bett's first wife, Hattie Frances Betts, died on July 21st, 1940, three years to the day of Mr. Betts' death. Mr. Betts was one of a large family of fine children who were raised with care and affection by parents who were energetic themselves, and successful in accumulating a very comfortable competence in this world's goods by honest dealings and industry. These traits of character were inherited by the children, and under the guidance of their parents, each of them has made an important place for themselves in the world. In his younger days Mr. Betts worked with his father in the lumber business, and farming, until the elder Mr. Betts retired to devote his time and attention to his large real estate holdings. Then Mr. Betts conducted a retail grocery business for a number of years where the Sinclair filling station is now located near Pine street. Finding this business too confining, for a number of years he transported freight for the steamboat company from Crisfield to Pocomoke City and Chincoteaaue, Va., and seafood from various Virginia points to Crisfield, until the boats running from Baltimore to Crisfield were discontinued. For several years past he has been employed at times by Mr. Arthur T. Cox, contractor and builder of this city, and also as a carpenter, having been engaged in this vocation just the week before his death. A man of fine instincts, friendly, honest and capable, a large circle of friends and acquaintances learned of his passing with genuine sorrow, but with the knowledge that he had been a good citizen and valuable to his city and community. Mr. Betts was married twice, his second wife, who survives him, being Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Landon Betts. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in Mariner's Church, with the pastor, Rev. Robert H. Wilson, officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyridge Park Cemetery. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Noland Ward, of Crisfield, and two sons, Norris Betts, of Chincoteague, Va., and Pvt. Emerson Betts, of the U. S. Army stationed at Phoenixville, Pa. Three brothers, County Commissioner Irving Betts and John Betts, of Crisfield, and C. C. Betts, of Cambridge, Md., and six sisters, Mrs. W. F. Sterling and Mrs. Charles W. Howeth, of Crisfield, Mrs. Anna Rawls, of Norfolk. Va., Mrs. Martha Gray and Mrs. Ruth Byrd, of Baltimore, and Mrs. May Smith, also survive him.
