John Burton "J.B" Ottinger passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021, surrounded by his loving wife of 76 years, his daughters, and his 93 year-old baby brother. J.B. was 98 years young. Born into the "Greatest Generation" on October 21, 1922, J.B. lived on a farm and attended school in the Elizabeth Community. At a young age, he went to work for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) in Sewanee, TN, until he was called to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. For three years and 3 months, he worked on a floating dry dock repairing war torn ships until the war ended. While serving his country, he came home on leave in February 1945, to marry the love of his life, Virginia Jo Mansfield. The couple were lifelong residents of Crockett Mills, Tennessee, (with the exception of a few years in Haslett, Michigan, where they worked in the auto industry). J.B. and Virginia raised their two daughters, Joan and Shirley, in a house in the center of Crockett Mills, where they have lived for 62 years. J.B. became known as one of the best welders and blacksmiths in Crockett County. He worked for and retired from American Air Filter in Brownsville, Tennessee. He also was known for growing the best tomatoes in the area and for sharing millions of pecans from their giant front yard pecan tree. For the past several years, he has been honored as the oldest living World War II Veteran in Crockett County. We are beyond proud to call him ours for so many reasons. Through the years, B.B. and Mama Gin, (as named by their four granddaughters), attended countless piano and voice recitals, ball games and school plays, weddings and family reunions. B.B. could build anything. He built playhouses, rocking horses, birdhouses and cedar chests. He could tie furniture down to the bed of a truck better than any mover in the Southeast. He didn't let the grandkids sing at the dinner table or stick chewing gum to their dinner plates to save it for later, but he let them do pretty much anything else they wanted to do. B.B. was our quiet giant. When he spoke, it was soft, but so BIG. When he laughed, it was a chuckle, but you could feel his delight . . . and you'd hold on to it for dear life. Whether you called him Mr. J.B., Uncle J.B., B.B., or Daddy, he was always a true friend, a tireless helper, and just a darn, good man. Five generations of loving family on Earth at the same time is a rare and precious treasure. J.B. will be lovingly missed and remembered by his wife Virginia Jo, daughters Joan Jones (Wendell) and Shirley Slayton (Harry); brother Willis Ottinger; grandchildren Tina Ackermann (Keith), Marty Jordan (Roy), and Jada Sherfey (Michael); great-grandchildren Aubree Magnussen (Steven), Alex Ackermann (Sarah), Andee Ackermann, Darby Mosier (Justin), Addison Davis (Morgan), Harrison and Houston Sherfey; great-great grandchildren Lily, Carson, and Faith, Adelyne and Ava, and (soon to arrive) Evelyn Rose, plus more dear family members and friends too numerous to list. B.B. was met at Heaven's door by his Angel-Granddaughter, Stacey and her husband Bruce Davis. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Mollie Ottinger, his sisters, Della Graves Crossnoe, Louise Smith Watridge, and brother Sylvester Ottinger. The family would like to thank Dr. and Mrs. Jerald White for always taking great care of J.B. Thank you to family and friends in the Crockett Mills Community for your loving care. We would also like to thank the staff at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3pm on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Ronk Funeral Home in Alamo, Tennessee. Visitation will be from 1-3 pm. Memorial donations can be made to Providence Baptist Church Cemetery or the charity of your choice.
