Wise, and almost completely demolished the machinery of the establishment. In running the first line, a short log was placed upon the carriage, leaving idle, at the end of it, two dogs (iron clamps for holding the logs to their place), one of which projected from the side of it. When the log was run through, instead of reversing the motion of the carriage, it was allowed to go on, causing the saw to come in contact with the dog. Then a scene of disaster occurred that baffles description. The rotary was hurled from its mandrel, the saw frame lifted from its position, the carriage displaced, machinery and belts broken, and in fact, the rotary mill entirely destroyed or so impaired as to render it useless. But those were nothing compared to the awful calamity which befell Mr. Wise, who was picked up with his body literally cut open, an oblong piece of saw having struck him and penetrated to the depth of five inches, inflicting a gash extending from the eft shoulder to the abdomen, and severing the left lung and all the left ribs. The wounded man was immediately conveyed to his boarding place - Mrs. Hess' in the Irving House building. Doctor Hershe was called, dressed the injuries, and did everything else in his power to alleviate the suffering of the patient, who, it is feared cannot survive. Mr. Wise, as we have already stated, is quite a young man, being almost twenty-two years of age. He is unmarried. He has a mother living near Rochester, Cedar County, and who, we believe is the only hear relative he can claim. She has been sent for, and is expected to arrive this evening or tomorrow. Mr. Wise was a member of Co. I., 11th. Iowa - Capt. Compton's Company and was in the army four years, during which time he performed duty zealously and faithfully. Last June he came to this city, and soon after his arrival received employment in Chamber's new saw mill, being one of the first hands engaged. By his employers and co-laborers, he is spoken of in the highest terms. This casualty makes the third one that has occurred at the new mill since it started, the first instance being when Mr. T. S. Berry had the fingers of his right hand cut off, the second when Mr. Brockett narrowly escaped the same fate, getting his fingers badly hurt. Mr. Chambers informs s that he cannot replace the machinery destroyed by the accident this morning, at a less outlay then twelve to fifteen hundred dollars. The rotary saw, which is of fifty-four inches in diameter, cost above two hundred dollars.
