Chester Herald, Thursday August 27, 1908 ---------------------------------------- John C. Duey, eldest son of Jacob W. Duey, was born in Republic County, Kansas, Nov. 9, 1888 and died at his home Aug. 25, after a brief but severe attack of typhoid fever, which terminated in an acute attack of appendicitis. He underwent an operation on Monday before his death, but his condition was such that he survived the operation scarcely twenty-four hours. John Duey was one of the most highly respected and popular young men of this community. He was a graduate of the Chester High Schol and had won a good name as a student at the Wesleyan University, where he was quite as popular as with his home people. He was on the editorial staff of the college paper and chairman on the committee on religious meetings of the college Y.M.C.A. Last year he represented the university at the International Y.M.C.A. Convention. His plans were laid to return to school this year in company with his brother, Clarence and sisters, Lizzie and Mae. He was a consistent Christian and a good worker in the church and Epworth League. His abscence (sic) is deeply mourned by the entire community. --------------------------------------- John C. Last year he held an important place in the freshman class and in November represented the university at the International Young Men's Christian Association Convention at Washington, D.C. During the winter term he was president of the Theophanian Men. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the (several unreadable words) in the Y.M.C.A., secretary of the Oratorial Association, and associate editor of The Wesleyan. Sam J. Ingraham, president of the Young Men's Christian Association says of Duey: "The death of our friend and co-worker John Duey, was one of the greatest losses which we could have sustained. Mr. Duey's true Christian character coupled with his earnestness and interest in the fellows made him one of our strongest men. Though we greatly mourn his loss yet the memory of his life will be sweet. He was a true type of the Association's ideal man." Chancellor Emeritus Huntington, at the news of Duey's death, said: "It is with a depth of sorrow which I cannot express that I learn of the death of a beloved student of the Nebraska Wesleyan - John C. Duey of Chester, Nebraska. I hasten to bear my testimony to his nobility of character and true manliness. As a student, he was diligent and thorough, and as a young man honest and true. We anticipated for him a great future and doubtless he has it, but we had hoped that many years of that future would be spent in usefulness here. 'The kingdoms are but one.'" A. Otis Hinson '96, pastor of the Chester M.E. Church, says" "John C. Duey was one of the cleanest and most manly Christian young men I have known. As his pastor it was my privilege to know him intimately. He died as he lived in peace with God and man." Mr. Duey was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Duey. Three brothers and four sisters survive him. His brother Clarence and two sisters, Lizzie and Mae had planned to attend the university also this year.
