He attended Harris Country School near the family farm and then graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1943. John served in the United States Navy during World War II in the V12 Scholastic program. He then earned his degree in economics from the University of Iowa in 1949. Following the completion of his university studies, he returned to Coon Rapids and farmed for ten years in both grain and cattle. He continued to be a partner in the Chrystal Brothers farming operation throughout his life. John was involved in banking and state and national politics. He was currently serving as Chairman of Iowa Savings Bank (Carroll, Coon Rapids, Bayard). He had served as president of Bankers Trust Company, Des Moines and as director of several west central Iowa rural banks and bank holding companies. Because of his many areas of expertise he served on corporate boards and received many awards including "Iowa Farm leader of the year" and Amnesty International "You Make A Difference" award. He was awarded honorary degrees from many Iowa colleges and universities and was in demand as a speaker. He was Visiting Professor of Economics at Iowa State University. A sample of John's involvement in civic service include Business People for Peace, Iowa College Foundation, Farm Aid, Iowa Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, and Grinnell College Board of Trustees. Currently John was serving as Iowa Campaign Chairman for Bill Bradley for president and had served in that capacity for other state and national political candidates. He was a candidate for Democratic Nomination for governor in 1990. His international leadership was recognized throughout the world. He has traveled to the Soviet Union many times since 1959, at that country's request, to advise on agriculture and to work for improved trade relations between the United States and the then U.S.S.R. In 1996 he was the second American to be awarded the "Order of Friendship" by the Russian Federation for the many years of friendship and cooperation with the former Soviet Union and the New Independent States. The following year he was elected as a foreign member to the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. John was admitted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa, on Sunday, January 16, 2000, as his health began to fail from cancer. He died there on Wednesday, January 19, 2000, at the age of 74 years. He is preceded in death by his parents and his second mother Julia Boise Shafer Chrystal, as well as a sister, Mary Chrystal. John is survived by his brother Tom Chrystal and his wife Anjean of Scranton; his sister Virginia and her husband Bill Davis of Omaha, NE; nephews Curtis Chrystal of Ottumwa; John Chrystal of Summit, NJ; and Eric Chrystal of Urbandale; nieces Dorothy D. Morrow of Omaha, NE and Julia D. Sacks of Edina, MN; eight great-nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
