Chrystal was born December 27, 1929 in Carroll. He attended Harris Country School, and graduated from Coon Rapids High School. He started his college career at Grinnell College, where he studied a broad liberal arts program, earned a B.S. in Agronomy at Iowa State University, and pursued graduate studies at Oklahoma State University. Upon completion of his studies, Tom pursued a farming and business career He and his brother John formed a partnership, Chrystal Brothers in 1951, and together they were active in both farming and banking, with Tom focusing on the farm. Tom, and his wife Anjean, were married December 30, 1955 and resided for many years southeast of Scranton. Upon his retirement in 2002, Tom and Anjean moved to Jefferson, Iowa Tom leaves an extensive legacy. He was one the first farmers to experiment with and promote new farming technology and production techniques, in particular pasture management, modern genetics, bull testing, and more recently, GPS assisted row crop farming. He was active in multiple farm organizations and served on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Beef Improvement Association and authored a witty, often insightful monthly column, Chrystal's Corner, for their monthly newsletter. He received numerous industry awards, including IBIA Commercial Beef Producer of the Year and the Beef Improvement Federation Pioneer Award. Tom and his wife Anjean were active well beyond Iowa's borders. They traveled extensively and hosted and sponsored several international graduate students from South Africa, China, and Russia. They could entertain others for hours with the photos and accounts of trips that even today would seem adventurous. Tom is preceded in death by his wife Anjean, his parents and his second mother Julia Boise Shafer Chrystal, his brother John, and his sisters Mary Chrystal and Virginia Davis. He is survived by his children Curtis Chrystal of Billings, MT, John Chrystal (Susan) of Summit, NJ, and Eric Chrystal (Rhonda) of Jefferson; five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces Dorothy Morrow of Omaha, NE and Julia Sacks of Edina, MN; and many other relatives and a world full of friends.
