Auctioneer at Newell Dies Last Friday: John C Layman Is Overtaken By Untimely Death at 44 Years of Age. John C. Layman prominent Buena Vista county resident and widely known as an auctioneer, died at his home at Newell last Friday morning. March 9th, at seven o'clock. Mr. Layman had been in ill health for several months, but was confined to his bed less than two weeks. During the last few months the best of specialists were consulted in hopes that he might regain his health but nothing could be done in the way of permanent relief. He had continued with his sales business with the help of an assistant and few realized that his condition was serious. His death was learned with deep regret by hosts of friends. Born Near Newell: John Clarence Layman was born November 29th, 1883 on the old home farm, nine miles north of Newell and was 44 years, 3 months and 9 days of age at the time of his death. The first few years of his life was spent on the farm after which the family moved to Newell and he received his education in the Newell high school. On October 25th, 1906 he was united in marriage to Miss Edith Thomas of North English, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. Layman had since made their home in Newell. To this union two children were born, Bruce Elwood, 18 years old, who will graduate from the Newell high school this year, and Virginia Viola, 9 years old. Auctioneer For 21 Years: Twenty-one years ago he joined his father, E.P. Layman in the sales business and continued in that partnership until the death of his father in 1926. Since that time he had been in the auctioneer business for himself. Although in ill health, he continued with his business with the help of an assistant and less than three weeks prior to his death, attended a sale at Fonda. Mr. Layman was a most estimable resident, always working for the betterment of the community in which he lived and was held in high regard by all who knew him. He was a member of the Elk and Modern Woodman lodges. Besides his wife and two children, he leaves to mourn his death, his mother, Mrs. E.P. Layman and one brother, Denton N Layman both of Newell and by other relatives and many friends. Mrs. A.S. Doxsee of Storm Lake and an aunt of Mr. Layman. Funeral Largely Attended: Funeral services were held from the Congregational church in Newell last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. E.H. Postfield, assisted by the Rev. Carver of the Methodist church and interment was beside his father and brothers in the Newell cemetery. The funeral was largely attended and the floral offerings were many and beautiful, showing the high esteem in which Mr. Layman was held. Many from distant points attended the funeral, including Mrs. John Shipman of Chicago, sister of Mrs. Layman, who assisted in caring for Mr. Layman the last two weeks. Many from Storm Lake were also in attendance.
