LAYMAN: Well Known Resident of this County for many Years Dies at 75. Mrs. E.P. Layman, well know Newell resident died at her home Thursday afternoon at 12:40, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 10 days. Mrs. Layman had been ill for eleven weeks, during which time she spent five weeks at the Swallum hospital. Her condition was so serious that nothing could be done for her and she was taken to her home, November 1st. Here death occurred Thursday. BORN IN PENNSYLVANIA: Mary Esther Linskill, the eldest child of John and Almira Linskill, was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, on July 2nd, 1860. At the age of 14 years she moved with her parents to Lanark, Ill. She made her home there until her marriage on January 1st, 1880 to Mr. Elwood Price Layman. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs Layman moved the following spring to Buena Vista County, locating on a farm nine miles north of Newell. They lived there until 1898, when they moved to Newell. Mr. Layman died August 25th, 1926. To this union five children were born, four sons and one daughter: Harry Thornton, who was accidentally killed on May 5th, 1926; laura lee, who died in infancy; John C. who passed away March 9th, 1928; Ralph Engle who died July 27, 1917; and denton N. now of Newell. ACTIVE CHURCH WORKER: At the early age of 15, Mrs. Layman took a stand for Christ and joined the Methodist church. She was a loyal and faithful member until her death, taking part in the various activities of the church. She was also a member of the Women's Relief Corps and of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a kind and loving mother, always thoughtful of others and was beloved by all who knew her. Although her recent illness was of eleven weeks duration, she bore her suffering without a murmur and was ready to go when summoned. She leaves to mourn her death, one son Denton N. Layman of Newell; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. A.S. Doxsee of Storm Lake; one brother, H.C. Linskill of Lanark, Ill, and many other relatives and friends. FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY: Funeral services were held from the Methodist church at Newell Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. A.J. Barkley. Interment was in the family lot in the Newell cemetery. During the services a quartet composed of Frank Witter, Mrs. O.A. Baskerville, Mrs. Payne and Lyle Smith, sang several numbers. David Christensen, a neighbor of Mrs. Layman for many years, also sang a solo. The funeral was largely attended and the floral tributes were many and beautiful, evidences of the love and regard in which Mrs. Layman was held. Bearers were: Albert Peterson, Henry Lehmkuhl, Gerald Chaney and L.E. Couch of Newell, C.W. Liercke of Storm Lake and Steve Hoft of Wall Lake. Relatives and friends from various points, including many from Storm Lake, were in attendance at the funeral.
