Mr. Corbett was born in County Cork, Ireland, September 25, 1830. He came to America in 1851 settling first in Boston, where he resided several years. Later he moved to Henry, Illinois, where on January 20, 1859, he was united in marriage with Ellen Barrow, the devoted wife and mother who survives and mourns him. They came to Iowa in 1871, and in 1873 settled in Jackson township, Greene county, where they resided for 17 years, and amassed a substantial competency for their old age. They moved to Bayard in 1890 to give their children better school advantages. Mr. Corbett was engaged in the mercantile for some years after moving to Bayard. Mr Corbett was a man of sterling character, high ability, and was respected and admired by all who knew him. He was modest in manner, genial and courteous public spirited and interested in progress and advancement. While living at Iowa City, he was foreman of a construction crew that helped erect the great bridge that spans the Mississippi between Davenport and Rock Island, an engineering enterprise which was considered remarkable in those days. For over fifty-three years himself and wife shared their joys and sorrows, and the golden wedding anniversary, which was celebrated in 1909 was an event of memorable character. Mrs. Corbett, who is in her seventy-seventh year, is left to carry the memory of a happy married life and a peaceful old age, surrounded by every comfort loving hearts and hands can supply. Eight children were born to their marriage as follows - Maurice, of Denver, Colorado; Mary Frances, who died December 25, 1877; Daniel B., of Tonopah, Nevada; John Jr. died 1871; James H., proprietor of the Palace Pharmacy, of Bayard; Dr Charles M., Corpus Christi, Texas; Margaret and Katherine at home. Margaret has been on the corps of teachers in Bayard for twelve years. Maurice is the only one married. All the children were present at the funeral except Daniel, who was unable to get here. There are three grandchildren, two girls and one boy. The boy has his grandfather's name Mr Corbett was a devout Catholic, always faithful to his church and regular in attendance until the weakness of old age and sickness made it impossible. He has known for some time that he was nearing the end, and often expressed himself as ready and willing to meet his Master. The funeral services were held by Father Cook at the Catholic church Saturday morning at 9 o'clock. Interment in the Catholic cemetery in Willow township, Greene county. Old time friends from Scranton and Jefferson came to pay their last tribute of respect to one whom all honored. Many joined the sorrowing ones at the cemetery, the rain and muddy roads making it impossible to get to the church services. A good Christian man, a devoted husband and father, a kind, honest, loyal neighbor and friend has been taken, for whom the community mourn.
