Atkinson, father of William Atkinson of Bolton, and Mrs. Ben Taylor of this city, started out for a walk yesterday and in some manner fell into a pond on the Bolt farm adjoining the Atkinson place, and was drowned. He was 81 years old and came to this county in an early day, taking a homestead. He had been a resident of the Bolton neighborhood for many years, and long was prominent in its affairs. He was 81 years old and came to this county in an early day, taking a homestead. He had been a resident of the Bolton neighborhood for many years, and long was prominent in its affairs. He has been in very feeble health for some time. Mr. Atkinson's wife died about 14 years ago and he has been making his home with his son. There was no information to give out this forenoon regarding the funeral, arrangements not having yet been completed. The funeral of Mr. Atkinson will be held tomorrow at 10 o'clock from the church at Bolton, with interment in the Harrisonville cemetery. Mr. Atkinson wandered away from home about 4 o'clock last evening and was discovered an hour or so later by members of his son's family. Transcribed by Bill Andres (47602571). Independence Daily Reporter, Sat., May 23, 1914 TOOK HIS OWN LIFE The funeral of John Atkinson, the aged man found drowned in the pond on the Bolt farm, Thursday afternoon, occurred this morning. It was thought at the time that the drowning was accidental, but a note written by Mr. Atkinson has since been found fastened to the fence and in which he told of his intentions to end his life and directing where the body would be found.
