He died instantly, the charge passing through the body. The act was clearly premeditated, as he had arranged the gun on the bed so it could be fired by pulling a string. The cause of the act was probably due to an attack of melancholia. Apollas Brackett, an elderly man who lives at the place, noticed that when he bade Mr. Nelson good morning yesterday he made no reply - something that he recalled after the discovery of the act as being wholly unlike Mr. Nelson. Mrs. Nelson heard the shot fired, but supposed her husband was shooting crows or some other game. She and Mr. Brackett had breakfast after he had done the morning chores and were not aware of what had taken place until after the meal was over. Neighbors say Mr. Nelson had appeared in excellent health and spirits of late and had remarked that his affairs were in good shape. Dr. F. J. Canedy of Shelburne Falls, medical examiner, was called and after reviewing the body ordered it turned over to W. J. Johnson of Shelburne Falls. Mr. Nelson formerly lived in Colrain. He leaves a widow but no children. His parents are dead. He owned a large farm and was considered to be a prosperous man. He was known as a quiet sort of a man and one unlikely to commit such a rash act. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at Bernardston, being proceeded by a prayer at the house in Hawley at 2 o'clock. [published Tuesday, March 16, 1909 in The Springfield Republican]
