The news was received in this city last night of the death yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, near Orland, in Glenn county, of John Deveney, an aged and respected resident of Butte county. The deceased was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, in 1839, and was therefore aged 72 years. He came to the United States in 1854, and settled first in Indiana. One year later he came to California and made his home in Sacramento. Then he moved to Shasta, where he lived until 1858, when he came to Butte county, where he resided until his death. At the time of his passing he was on a visit to his son, William Deveney, in Glenn county. John Deveney was a respected pioneer. He was loved by all who knew him for his honest and kindly traits. A large circle of sincere friends are left to mourn his death. He is survived by three sons, J.L. Deveney of this city, William Deveney of Glenn county, and George Deveney of Arizona, and a daughter, Mrs. G.W. Rupley of Woodland. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. The body will be brought to this city for interment in the family plot in the Chico cemetery. ~~~ 73-year-old John Deveney was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on February 16, 1911 (basis of birth date).
