Chico Daily Enterprise, Monday Evening, June 17, 1918: "State Board Allots Land Applicants at Durham. Fifty-six farmers were made happy Saturday at Berkeley and that number are today listed as future Chico suburbanites, when the Land Settlement Board allotted 44 farms and 12 laborers' blocks in the state tract at Durham. ... Among the successful applicants are a number of men who are expert in stock, dairy and grain. On Allotment 7 is William Deveney, of Woodland, Cal., with 32.81 acres."
Report of the State Land Settlement Board of the State of California, June 30, 1918, (pg. 12): "Advantages of Ready Made Farms. The settlers who secured farms planted to alfalfa will be able to cut three crops of hay during the remainder of the first season. The grain planted by the board was ready to harvest when the farms were allotted and settlers who received farms on which grain had been planted found immediate paying labor in their own fields and some made handsome profits in addition to wages, as the following table of returns shows: Wm. Deveney, Allotment 7 - 20.4 acres barley, net return: $666.10."
