We were taken by surprise yesterday afternoon to learn of the death of Mrs. Margaret Deveny which took place at her farm, near St. John, Colusa county, yesterday morning. Deceased was a most amiable woman, mother and friend. She was an old resident of Chico, 54 years of age. It was in Chico she raised her family, and where she has many friends who mourn her loss. About nine years ago she removed to Colusa county, and her life has been spent in the quietness of the farm ever since. She was mother of Mr. John Deveny, druggist of Chico. The funeral will take place from the Catholic Church in Chico, tomorrow, at 12 o’clock, where Requiem High Mass will be celebrated. ~~~ Chico Weekly Enterprise, Friday Evening, October 25, 1889, pg 1 col 7: Funeral of Mrs. Margaret Deveny. Yesterday the solemn and impressive ceremony of high mass requiem, at the Catholic church, at the funeral of Mrs. Margaret Deveny, was one of those occasions which will long be remembered by those present. Mrs. Deveny was a worthy mother, reverenced by her children, and beloved by all who knew her. The church was crowded by relatives and friends, notwithstanding the rainstorm, and the wealth of floral tributes and long line of carriages showed the universal respect held for the deceased. [no age provided] Margaret Smith Deveney was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on October 20, 1889.
