Curtiss of Lincoln, who died Sunday, May 22, 1960, at the Veterans hospital in Lincoln, at the age of 68 years, 6 months and 19 days. Death followed an illness of several months. John E. Curtis, son of Arthur D. and Kathryn Curtiss, was born November 3, 1891, at Geneva. He grew up in Geneva, graduating from Geneva high school in 1909. He attended the University of Nebraska. He was later admitted to the Nebraska bar by examination and he was also licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court. He was employed for a time in the Farmers State Bank of Fairmont and the post office at Geneva. Prior to World War I he also practiced law in Geneva, later serving in the war. In 1919 he moved to Lincoln, where he resided until his death. He was married to Eva Huston and to this union was born one daughter, Ruth Ann. His wife passed away July 1, 1956. Mr. Curtiss had worked in the field of electric utilities for 30 years, serving as Consumers Public Power District director of public relations from 1947 until May 1, 1960. His career with consumers included a post as manager of the Lincoln District of the Iowa-Nebraska Light and Power Co., from 1930 until 1941 when he continued as manager of the Lincoln District of Consumers until 1947. In 1919 he became secretary of the State Railway Commission serving until 1926. He was a member of the railway commission by appointment from 1927 until 1930. Mr. Curtiss was a past member of the board of directors of the University of Nebraska alumni Association, and was an honorary member of Innocents Society. He had served as president of the Lincoln Lions club, Better Business Bureau, University club and the Lincoln chamber of Commerce. He was also active in organizing the Lincoln centennial activities. Active in the American Legion and Masonic circles in Lincoln and Nebraska, Mr. Curtiss had served as national vice commander of the Legion, state commander, and commander of the Lincoln post. During World War II, Mr. Curtiss was chairman of the Legion’s postwar planning committee. He served as national Executive Committeeman of the American Legion for Nebraska from 1944 until the time of his death. He was president of the Legion’s national Child Welfare Foundation and was chairman of the National Child Welfare Liaison committee. Because of his service to the American Legion, Mr. Curtiss was presented a life membership in Lincoln Post No. 3. Mr. Curtiss was also active in the Legion-sponsored Boys State since its inception. Until his death, he was a member of the board of directors. He served as vice president of Boys State from 1952-58. A past potentate of the Sesostris temple of the shrine, Mr. Curtiss was a 33rd degree K. C. C. H. Scottish Rite Mason and was past grand orator of the grand lodge of Masons in Nebraska. Until his death, Mr. Curtis served as state chairman of the community Activities Division of the United States Savings Bond activity in Nebraska. Mr. Curtis was one of the organizers of the Lincoln Junior Chamber of Commerce having served as the first secretary of that group. He was past president of the Chamber of Commerce and had also filled the posts of vice president and director. Also active in charity work, Mr. Curtiss had served as chairman of the Red Cross Roll Call and Christmas Seal drives, was a member of the war savings bond committee and a trustee of the Nebraska Children’s Home society. He had worked with the community Chest fund drives and served as a member of the advisory board of the Lincoln Salvation Army. Mr. Curtiss was a member of the Lincoln Elks. He headed the operating committee of the Lincoln USO Center and was named chairman of the regional defense committee by Governor Dwight Griswold in 1941. He was director of the Veterans Building Corporation and member and vice-chairman of the auditorium advisory committee. Mr. Curtiss was a member of Trinity Methodist church and served on its official board. He was also a trustee of the church. Before joining Trinity Methodist, Mr. Curtiss taught Grace Methodist church’s Berean Sunday school class for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Eva and a brother, Paul. Surviving are a brother Val B. of Lincoln; a sister, Mrs. J. A. Fischer of Shickley; daughter Ruth Ann Swailley of Kearney; nephews, Attorney John Arthur Curtiss of Lincoln and Dr. Charles Curtiss of Kearney; nieces, Mrs. Carolyn Chester of Gardena, Cal., Mrs. Robert Buddenberg of Gothenburg, Sandra Curtiss and Sonne Curtiss, both of Lincoln; and two grandchildren. Prior to the graveside services at Geneva, services were held at the Trinity Methodist church in Lincoln with Dr. Vance D. Rogers, president of Nebraska Wesleyan University and former pastor of Trinity church, officiating. The Nebraska Signal June 9th, 1960 page 6.
