Later the family... Read More	CURTISS, KATHRYN –Mrs. Kathryn Curtiss of Geneva passed away at her home Saturday, April 6, 1957 at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 29 days. She was in good health considering her age until a few months ago, but she became seriously ill about a week before her passing. Kathryn Welch was born February 7, 1870, at Newburn, Ia. With her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Welch, she came to Nebraska in 1875 and located at Fillmore Mills, north of Grafton, in Fillmore county, where her father operated a grist mill. Later the family moved to Fairmont where she attended the public schools. She also attended Doane College at Crete. She was married to Arthur D. Curtiss, September 17, 1890. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Curtiss moved to Geneva, where Mrs. Curtiss resided continuously until taken by death. This union was blessed with five children. Preceding her in death were her husband, who died July 15, 1912, a daughter, Grace, who died in infancy and a son, Paul who died March 19, 1951. Surviving are two sons, John E. and Val B. both of Lincoln, a daughter Bess (Mrs. J. A. Fischer) of Shickley, seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Bess Stephenson of North Platte, and other relatives. Mrs. Curtiss was truly a Nebraska pioneer. She endured all of the hardships and tests of early pioneer days in Nebraska and out of this developed a strong and rugged personality. She was a woman of deep convictions who never hesitated to stand and be counted for those things which she felt were good. She was active in the Geneva Methodist church and Sunday school throughout her life. She taught a Sunday school class of young people more than 60 years and she attended church regularly until recently. Most of the time she had a class of boys, some of whom have had distinguished careers. Her interest and concerns were many and diversified. In addition to her church, she was active for many years in the Geneva Rebekah lodge, the Jolly Neighbors club, of which she was a charter member, and the West Side Improvement club. Greatly interested in politics, Mrs. Curtiss served on the Fillmore county Republican committee almost half a century. Working with her husband she sponsored and promoted the Anti-Cigaret league, A. C. L., as it was known, for many years. Organized more than 50 years ago, the league functioned for nearly 15 years, touching the lives of many young men who took pledges not to use tobacco before they were 21 years of age. She was also an officer and active worker in the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in the county. For more than 30 years Mrs. Curtiss was superintendent of the Fine Arts department at the Fillmore county fair, exerting every effort to increase public interest in hobbies and fine arts. She was an active member of the woman’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church, receiving a life membership in the organization as recognition of her services through the years. Mrs. Curtiss was the first resident of the Geneva community to receive an award from the Geneva Parent-Teacher association for her outstanding contribution to the youth of the community. She derived much pleasure in life from her home, her lawn flowers, trees and the birds. It was her practice to plant a tree for each new grandchild in her family and with genuine satisfaction she watched the grandchildren and the trees grow into maturity. She was an inspiration to many youngsters, who through the years roomed at her home while attending Geneva High school. She regarded them as members of family and took a deep interest in the advancement, accomplishments and welfare. Services were held at the First Methodist church in Geneva Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Dr. F. E. Pfoutz gave the tribute from this text: “She hath done what she could.” From Mark 14:8. Rev. Charles Flickinger of Shickley read the scriptures and offered prayer. Mrs. H. A. Rosenau of Geneva sang “My God and I” and Misses Carol and Alfrieda Slepicka of Tobias, who were former residents of her home sang “Beyond the sunset.” Miss Harriett Scott of Geneva provided organ music. Pallbearers were Mervin Bedford, Howard Hamilton, Chester Hayden, Melvin Ralston, Paul Shaner and Eric Waltemade, all of Geneva. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. Members of the Rebekah lodge; Jolly Neighbor Kensington and county fair officials attended the service in a body. The Nebraska Signal 11 April 1957 page 4.
