Edward Portwood, prominent Nelson business and civic leader, died about 6:30 this (Thursday) evening at Brodstone Hospital in Superior as the result of a coronary attack suffered at his home here at 7:00 o'clock this morning. He was 80 years old. Mr. Portwood had been actively engaged with his business interests here up to the day of his death. He has headed the Nelson firm bearing the Portwood name since March 1909, and was associated with mercantile firms here as an employee for 12 years prior to that time. The Portwoods have owned and operated stores at Campbell, Clay Center, Guide Rock, Fairbury, Curtis, Imperial, Superior, Blue Hill, Hastings, Wymore, Exeter, Fairmont, Byron and Davenport. In addition, Mr. Portwood had bought and closed out more than 100 stores of all kinds in southern Nebraska. In May 1959, Mr. Portwood was named the year's "Outstanding example of Nebraska good neighbors" by Ak-Sar-Ben, Nebraska philanthropic organization. Survivors include his wife, the former Dollie Orner, a son LaVerne, Albuquerque, N. Mex.; two daughters, Gail Portwood of Wenatchee, Wash., and Mrs. Humphrey (Doris) Evans of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Harland, of Davenport, Ia.; and two sisters, Mrs. Vivian Woods and Maude Portwood, both of Nelson. Funeral services are to be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the Nelson Methodist Church. Burial will be made in the Nelson cemetery (sic). The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, June 2, 1960 ============================== John Edward Portwood was born in Macon County, Illinois, on Jan 20, 1880, and was brought to a Nebraska farm with his parents at the age of two. After finishing school at Edgar and Nelson he taught a rural school for one year. Then he worked for Mr. William Voigt, who operated a general store in Nelson. There he met and married Dollie Orner. To this marriage four children were born. In 1908, Mr. Portwood, with his brothers, Harland and Wilbur, started a business in Nelson. Over the years, his business interests expanded to include stores in a number of towns. In addition, he had many other merchandising interests throughout southern Nebraska. He helped many young men to get their start in the business world. Civic affairs occupied a large place in his life. He was active in the Methodist Church and taught a Sunday school class for over 40 years. He was active in city government, community organizations and Masonry. His active support of county and state fairs made him a well-known figure to many. In 1959, Mr. Portwood was honored by his community, when the Chamber of Commerce sponsored "Ed Portwood Night." A banquet in his honor was followed by a "This Is Your Life" presentation. In the same year, he was named the year's "Outstanding example of Nebraska good neighbors" by Ak-Sar-Ben, Nebraska philanthropic organization. He was preceded in death by Don E. Portwood in 1948. Survivors are his wife, the former Dollie Orner; a son, LaVerne of Albuquerque, N. Mex.; two daughters, Gail of Wenatchee, Wash., and Doris (Mrs. Humphrey Evans) of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Harland, of Davenport, Ia.; and two sisters, Mrs. Vivian Wood and Maude Portwood, both of Nelson. Mr. Portwood passed away on June 2, 1960, at the Brodstone hospital (sic) in Superior at the age of 80 years. Funeral services were held June 5, 1960, at the Methodist Church in Nelson. Rev.
