Read More	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, March 21, 1918; pg. 1 Nancy Jane Culver was born near Zanesville, Ohio, September 15, 1853, and passed away at her home in Nelson at 9 a.m. Friday, March 15, 1918. Her parents moved to Christian county (sic), Illinois, in 1854, locating near Buckhart Grove, Springfield being their nearest town at that time. In the spring of 1864 the family again moved, this time to Macon county (sic), Illinois, near the town of Macon. Here the deceased grew to womanhood and at an early age assumed a heavy share of the household duties for a family of twelve, in order that her mother might regain lost health. At fifteen years of age she united with the Methodist church at the Middlesworth schoolhouse near her home in Macon county (sic). She was united in wedlock with David Portwood, on September 17, 1872. To this union nine children were born, three of whom (Norman, Norval and Florence) have preceded her to the land beyond. Deceased leaves to mourn their loss, her husband, David Portwood, four sons, Edward, Wilbur, Harland and Guy, two daughters, Maude and Vivian, all of Nelson and Edgar; two brothers, W.T. Culver of Shelbyville, Ills.; and J.H. Culver of Decatur, Ills.; three sisters, Mrs. M.M. Hughes of St. Maries, Idaho; Mrs. I.J. McCready of Ridgway, Colorado; and Mrs. J.J. Mossholder of Pasadena, California; as well as a host of distant relatives and friends. The family moved to a farm near Edgar, Nebraska, in 1883, where they resided for more than twenty years; finally moving to the present home in Nelson about fourteen years ago. Her life is an open book, known to all. Despite the fact of a severe paralytic stroke, which she suffered twenty-two years ago, and from she never fully recovered, she has always tried to do her full share in home, church and community. May her example be an inspiration to us all. Her funeral was held at the M.E. church (sic) Sunday at 2:30, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. W.W. Hull, and burial was in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
