Klawitter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ========================== The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, March 7, 1968; pg. 7 Maude Portwood was born in Macon County, Illinois, July 1, 1881 the daughter of David & Nancy (Culver) Portwood. She passed away at the Brodstone hospital in Superior February 26, 1968 at the age of 86. She had been a resident at the Nelson Good Samaritan Home since last year. The Portwood family came to Nebraska early enough to homestead and they were first settled in the Angus-Edgar area. In 1904 Maude transferred her membership to the Nelson First Methodist Church from the Methodist Church in Angus during the pastorate of the Rev. C.B. Metcalf. She taught a girls' class in Sunday school for many years and was active in many phases of church services. She was an ardent Bible student all her life. Many will remember her courteous, cheerful service as a clerk in her father's, and later, her brothers' stores in Nelson. Proceeding her in death were her parents, her sister Florence (Mrs. Clarence Marshall), and three brothers, Edward, Wilbur and Guy. Surviving are a sister, Vivian Wood of Davenport, Nebraska, a brother, Harland Portwood, of Davenport, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held February 28 at the Methodist Church in Nelson with Rev. Maurice Holt officiating. Casket bearers were Ralph Mumma, Harry Shaw, Ira Clabaugh, Jake Chapman, Jim Bargen and Louis Petz. Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery with the Klawitter Funeral Home in charge.
