The Shinns sayed here until the forest fires, then went back to Iowa. Eight years later, in 1917, they returned and stayed on for good. Grandpa Shinn said that when he first came, there were just a few scattered log houses. John Shinn died in the spring of 1974. He was 94 years old. He lived a long, full life and left many descendants. During his golden years he would walk along the village streets, a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eyes. His friendly greeting made many a stranger feel at home and often they adopted him as their "Grandpa Shinn". ------------- Sawyer County Record Feb. 28, 1974 John E. Shinn, 94, resident of Exeland, WI, passed away at the Rusk County Memorial Hospital in Ladysmith, WI, on Feb. 15, 1974. He was born June 22, 1879, at Woodburn, Iowa; came to Sawyer County in 1918. Survivors include Mrs.Lucy Wienberger of Fall River, WI, Mrs. Coral Waite and Mrs. Veda Apseter of Exeland, Mrs. Gertin Sarn of Burr Ridge, IL, Mrs. Olive Polito of Lockport, IL, and Ernest Shinn of Dixon, IL; 36 grandchildren, 112 great-grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Exeland Methodist Church, Feb. 18, at 1PM, the Rev. Tony WIlson officiating. Burial in Exeland Cemetery, the McElravy-Geier Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
