September 13, 1998 My brothers, Gene and Clifford Perkins, and I visited an old cemetery today. The cemetery is located on the Stillwell farm in Green County near the LaRue and Taylor County lines. Bruce Stillwell made arrangements for us to venture into this fairly remote area. Today we set forth and following an old road from Hwy 210, a short distance west of Corinth Baptist Church, we headed south into Green County. We drove past an old, empty, boarded up house that once belonged to Lewis Young Skaggs. He was the son of Henry D. Skaggs, son of Stephen Skaggs, b. 1784. Here Lewis and his wife, Mary Susan Thompson Skaggs raised their children; Robert William, b. 1888; Edward McClain, b. 1890; James Mace, b. 1893; Florence, b. 1896; George Albert, b. 1899; Dorcas Ann, b. 1899; Marvin, b. 1905; and Flossie, b. 1908. We followed the old road down a steep, rocky, hill into bottomland on the headwaters of Big Brush Creek. We were about a mile or more from Hwy 210 when we parked our pickup trucks on the bank of the creek. Some distance further down this tributary was the location of the Brushy Post Office. We crossed the creek and climbed a steep hill through the wooded area until we reached the crest of the hill. The wooded area had been logged in recent years and tree laps were all over the place. We soon found a headstone, then another. There were 3 readable headstones and several jagged stones in the area and some depressions in the earth that led us to believe there were at least a dozen people buried there. The first stone read: "John DeSpain, born November 16, 1806; died July 14, 1866" with the following inscription: "A faithful husband and father dear, In sweet repose is sleeping here. His painful loss we deeply feel, but God can all our sorrows heal." This is the gravesite for John DeSpain that married Malinda Bazor and had about 18 children. The second stone read: Emery T. born Sep 30, 1875; died Oct 18, 1875; George M. born Aug 25, 1876; died Sep 1, 1876; children of Louis and Amanda DeSpain. Both children were on the same stone. The parents referred to on this stone are Lewis Oscar DeSpain and Amanda Jane Johnson Despain who married in 1871. Both are buried in the DeSpain Cemetery near Wards, Kentucky located about 2 miles west of this location. The third stone read: Infant born Oct 22, 1869, sons of E. L. and S. E. DeSpain; Infant born Sep 25 1870. These are children of Edward L. DeSpain and his wife, Susan E. Warren DeSpain. They shared the same stone. The first infant remained unnamed, but my records indicate the second one was Ezekial DeSpain, b. Sep 25, 1870 and died Nov 12, 1870. Edward DeSpain is buried in Dezarn Cemetery in Green County and Susan E. Warren DeSpain is buried in Mt. Moriah Baptist Church cemetery near Mt. Sherman in LaRue County. The cemetery is in terrible condition. It has seen no maintenance of any kind for perhaps a hundred years or more. The people that logged the area were not respectful of the cemetery and felled trees over the area. We recorded the information and took a few photographs and then retraced our trail back down the cliff area and crossed the creek to where we had left our trucks. We were thankful the weather has been extremely dry for the past month of so, because the old road could be almost impassable in wet, rainy weather. We drove to the top of the hill, past the old home place of Lewis Skaggs and locked the gate on our way out. Most of this area is sometimes leased to hunters and no one should venture into the area without permissioin. [added by Russell Perkins, FAG #47213352]
