On January 31, 1897, John was united in marriage with Catherine Elmina Sewart, the daughter of Fredrick Ferdinand and Sarah Ann (Cochran) Sewart, in Hollis. John and Catherine became the proud parents of five children: • Wilma Ruby Griffin (1898 - 1994) • Rovesta Elizabeth Griffin (1899 - 1996) • Maude Pearl Griffin (1901 - 1999) • Wilber Sewart Griffin (1905 - 1986) • Beverly Griffin (1913 stillborn) During the early years of their marriage, John and Catherine lived in Hollis and Concordia, Kansas. The 1900 U.S. Federal Census indicates they lived in a rented house on East Fifth Street in Concordia when their first two daughters, Wilma and Rovesta were ages two and one, respectively. John was for some time a farmer in Cloud County but took up carpentry when he moved his family to Miltonvale in March 1910. He made furniture and built houses, many of which are still standing today, including his own home at 103 South George Street. His reputation as a trusted craftsman continued for the rest of his life, which is remarkable when you consider he completed school up to the 3rd grade. Given his wife's experience as a school teacher, she taught him how to calculate carpentry measurements. John and Catherine were devout Christians who practiced their faith and raised their children in the traditions of the Wesleyan Holiness movement. They were active members of the Wesleyan Methodist Church and were strong supporters of the Miltonvale Wesleyan College and Academy. John was loved and respected by his grandchildren who remember him fondly as a patient, hard-working man who loved music and singing. He would play his harmonica for them and enjoyed roughhousing with them. His granddaughter Claudia recalls getting on his nerves while playing as a child with her cousins in his carpenter shop, yet he never yelled at them. His granddaughters Jonnie and Clarene recall enjoying listening to songs on his collection of records played on his 1916 Thomas Edison Diamond Disc Phonograph. Despite failing eyesight from growing old age, John nevertheless continued his trade. Only a few months before his death, the people of Miltonvale could still see the familiar sight of John Griffin carrying a piece of new lumber in his faithful 1929 Model A Ford and whistling as he drove along. John passed away on October 12, 1962, in Miltonvale at the home of his daughter, Rovesta. He was 88 years old. His funeral was held at the F. C. Hill Wesleyan Memorial Church in Miltonvale. He was laid to rest in the Hollis Cemetery with Catherine.
