Description	:	Son of Joseph and Margaret Ball. Born in what was then known as Brooke, Co. Virginia. Served in Co.D, 19 Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Died in Prairie Grove, Ark. and is physically buried at Fayetteville National Cemetery, Fayetteville, Ark. There is a memorial entry for him and a headstone photo at that cemetery - J F Ball . Note: the caption for this headstone photo at the FNC written on June 29, 2006 by Rosa Cline states "Photo taken by my 10 1/2 years old daughter, Abigail whom wanted to help memorialize the Veterans. A memorial marker with extensive inscription notes was installed in the Ball family plot here in Evergreen Cemetery; therefore this Find A Grave Evergreen Cemetery memorial by this contributor is made to acknowledge his life, the Ball family here in Fairfield, and his service to his country, and to provide the link above to his physical burial location. ------ Note: the headstone in Fairfield uses the death date of December 9, 1862; the memorial entry at the Fayetteville National Cemetery uses the date of December 7, 1862. Will use the December 9th date for this memorial, per F-A-G guidelines for such discrepancies, but the discrepancy is noted. See Don Harper's notes below about Dec. 8 possibly being the date of death per National Archives information. ------ The following was submitted by Don Harper to this contributor on April 3, 2010 for clarification: "The following is from information I received from the National Archives. Note that we now have three dates of death. I'm inclined to believe the Archives. Military (2) Private, Co., B, 19th Reg't., Iowa Infantry. Enlisted 12 Aug 1862 at Locust Grove, IA, for 3 years. Mustered in 20 Aug 1862 at Keokuck, IA. Received $27.00 bounty. Description- 19 years old, brown eyes, red hair, light complection, 5'7" tall. Participated in Battle of Prairie Grove, AK on 7 Dec 1862. Received a fatal head wound and died 8 Dec. Buried Prairie Grove. List of personal effects includes 1 knapsack, 3 shirts, 1 pr. drawers, 2 pr socks, 2 towels, 1 handkerchief, 1 testament, a hymnbook, a ball of yarn and a gold pencil.
