However, after further family research from another contributor, obituary information for Mary herself, and biographical information and headstone spelling of her husband, Dr. Smith Augustus Spilman, it is evident that the headstone spelling of the married surname is in error. Perhaps once the headstone was engraved it wasn't financially possible or feasible to correct the married name spelling. Based on this additional information, the married surname for Mary, as used on this memorial, is being changed to "Spilman". The death year for Mary is correct as to the year: 1881. However, evidently in the biography of her husband and perhaps other family trees, the death date has been claimed to be March 4, 1881. However, upon looking up the two personal obituaries for Mary in the microfilm records at the Fairfield Public Library, it is evident from the information in those obituaries and the dates of publication that Mary actually died on Wednesday, March 2, 1881, in Ottumwa, Wapello county, Iowa. According to these obituaries, her remains were then brought to Fairfield for burial on Friday, March 4, 1881. The cemetery listing records did not specify a burial date, just her birth year and death year (1850-1881). It may be that others researching Mary relied on the death date of March 4, 1881 as used in reference to her in the biography of her husband, without going further to look up her obituaries and find that date was not consistent with her actual, published, obituaries. Whether or not there is a Wapello county death record for Mary isn't known to this contributor at this time. Since death records didn't start in Iowa until 1880, it is possible that even if there was a death record provided for Mary that the burial date of March 4, 1881 was misconstrued as being her actual death date. Based on this information, this memorial will update the DOB/DOD information to be as accurate as possible with all available information and sources. The biography provided by Don Harper stated that Mary was born in Hancock county, Virginia. That may well be at the time she was born, but there may have been boundary changes or merges of counties since then. There is no "Hancock" county in the F/A/G location options for Virginia, so this memorial is only going as far as Virginia for the birth location. As spouse relationship link to Dr. Smith Augustus Spilman is also now being added to this memorial, using 1879 for the marriage year. //rkt November 11, 2016 ----------------- Note: this biography provided by Don Harper on November 12, 2016 for use on this memorial: "Mary Washington Ball was born in Hancock Co., VA, the youngest child of Joseph and Margaret (Langfitt) Ball. She came to Iowa with her family in 1854 and is first recorded at the age of 7 in the 1860 Census, living in Liberty Twp., Jefferson Co., IA with her parents and her siblings. In 1870 she was still living with her parents in Fairfield P.O., Locust Grove Twp., Jefferson Co., IA. She married Dr. Smith Augustus Spilman (who went by his initials, S.A.) on 4 Dec 1879 in Ottumwa, Wapello Co., IA. Dr. Spilman was a widower with a daughter, Martha Amelia, born 15 Sep 1874. Mary is listed in the 1880 Census living in Ottumwa, Wapello Co., IA, with her husband and two boarders. Spilman’s daughter, Martha, however, in 1880, was a 5-year old, living with her uncle and aunt, Henry and Lydia Spilman (who were 22 and 17) in Highland, Wapello Co., IA. She was living with her father and his third wife when the 1895 Iowa State Census was taken. Mary’s obituary states that she was ill for some months. The 1880 census was taken in early June and Mary died on 2 March 1881. The sad announcement came to us last week of the death of Mrs. Mary Ball Spilman, wife of Dr. S. A. Spilman, of Ottumwa, which occurred in that city Wednesday last. Mrs. Spilman was well known in this city as Mary Ball, and had made her home here since childhood, being but a mere babe (sic. well, actually about 4 years of age, not an infant) when her father, Hon. Joseph Ball, removed here from Virginia. Since her father's death she had made Ottumwa her home, residing with her sister, Mrs. Dr. Lewis, and there was married, it seems but a few months ago, to Dr. Spilman. In the different stages of her life, under all circumstances, she was a general favorite, both in the home circle and among an extended acquaintance. Always bright and sunny and cheerful, she made friends wherever she went, and her death will be deeply felt in both cities. She had been in good health until a few months ago, when she was taken with the disease which caused her death - one that baffled the skill of her physicians. From the time disease fastened upon her there has been a gradual decline, and she passed away peacefully and calmly. The remains were brought to this city for interment, the funeral occurring Friday (sic. March 4, 1881), from the residence of her brother, W. C. Ball (sic.
