She was living with her parents in Hancock Co. VA. She was born in VA (and continued to name that state in all succeeding Census). The family moved to Jefferson Co., IA, in 1854. Anna was still residing with her parents, and was a common school teacher when the 1860 Census was taken. On 10 Sep 1868, Anna H. Ball, 27, born ca. 1841, was married to Charles G. Lewis in Jefferson Co., IA. The 1870 and 1880 Censuses and the 1885 and 1895 Iowa State Censuses list Anna living with her husband, and her two children, Fred A., and Charles, in Ottumwa, Wapello Co., IA where her husband was a physician. Charles died on 6 May 1900 and Anna, now 60, was living at 315 Fifth Street in Ottumwa when the 1900 Census was taken. The 1915 Iowa State Census and the 1910 Census also recorded her at the same address. But, in 1900, again in 1910, her son Frederick A., was head of household and she was living with him and his family. The latter census recorded that she had had 2 children, both still living." Fairfield Journal May 9, 1911 Pg. 3, Col. 1 Mrs. Anna Ball Lewis died at 7:30 o'clock this morning at her home in Ottumwa. She had been in poor health for some time. Mrs. Lewis was a sister of George and W.C. Ball and the late Mrs. Hanna Stever, and she was raised in this city. The funeral will probably be held at 3 o'clock tomorrow in Ottumwa. ------------------- Note: the following obituary transcription is revised a/o October 25, 2016 with verbatim text from the original text found on microfilm. A prior transcription has been found to have been edited and paraphrased. Fairfield Journal Wednesday May 10, 1911 MRS. ANN B. LEWIS WAS WELL KNOWN. The Ottumwa Courier has the following in regard to Mrs. Anna Ball Lewis who formerly lived in this city. Mrs. Anna Harrison Ball Lewis, aged 70, for more than forty years a resident of Wapello county, answered the final summons Monday Morning (sic) at 7:30 o'clock at the family residence, 315 East Fifth street. Death came after an illness of only ten days of illness and removed this lovable woman. Her death will be learned with sorrow by her legion of friends, as she was loved and respected by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her loss two sons, Dr. F. A. and Dr. C. B. Lewis of this city and also two grandchildren, Dorothy and Dwight Lewis. The deceased was born in Cumberland, W. Va., and at an early date removed to Jefferson county. About forty years ago she came to Wapello county, where she has since resided. The funeral service will be held from the residence of her son, Dr. C. B. Lewis, 121 East Maple avenue, conducted by Rev. R. J. Locke, pastor of the First Congregational church. Her funeral tomorrow (sic) marks the same date as the burial of her husband, Dr. C. G. Lewis, eleven years ago. Burial will be made in the Ottumwa cemetery. Dr. F. A. Lewis, owing to illness, is unable to be present at the funeral of his mother, but his wife and daughters, Miss Dorothy Lewis, have arrived from Arnold's Park to attend the services. ------ "Fairfield Ledger", Sept. 24, 1868, Pg. 3, Col. 4 MARRIED, on the 10th inst. by Rev.
