From my family research Gordon was born Irvin Smith, b 14 Jan 1896 Morrill, Brown, Kansas the son of John Jacob Aster SMITH (FAG 98621814) and Ida Belle CARRICO. John J A SMITH was killed in a tornado 17 May 1896 at Morrill, not long after John died, Ida took the 3 children, Letta, June and Irvin to an orphanage not telling any of the Smith family. In the March 25, 1909 Morrill Weekly News, "Mrs. Reis of Liberty, Neb., visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Smith. Mrs. Reis is the foster mother of Gordon Smith Reis." the J. I. Smith's are the parents of John J A Smith. Still lots of questions like where did Gordon end up. Contributor: Larry Gilbert (46821852) • [email protected] ************************************************************************************** John was born in Indiana where his parents farmed near Pettit and moved to Nebraska with his brothers, we aren't sure which came first, only that William, John, Charles, Addison and Francis all moved to Nebraska and farmed in different locations. John and Charles settled in Pawnee County in the Liberty area. Census records aren't always accurate, but can help to a great extent, here is some of what has been found: In the 1880 US Census, Perry, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana John F. Reis was listed in his parents, Tighman & Elizabeth Reis, household and his maternal grandparents, Enos & Sophia Fritz (Fretz). No 1890 Census Records. Researcher Barbara Schwartz found that John F Reis and Anna Owen were married January 28, 1891 at Liberty, Nebraska. Her parents were Harvey and Catherine (Hanna) Owen and are buried in the Liberty Cemetery. In the June 9,1900 US Census, Mission Creek & West Branch, Pawnee Co., Nebraska is the family listed as RECS. It is my belief though everything doesn't match, that this is REIS. Recs, John F. 38 was born Oct. 1867 IN, married 10 yrs, parents both born PA; Own & farmed 86 acres. wife, Anna O. 37 was born Oct. 1868 IL, married 10 yrs, one child, one living, father VA, mother IL. son, Gordon, 4, was born Jan. 1896 NE, father IN, Mother IL. In the Apr. 22, 1910 US Census, Mission Creek, Pawnee Co., Nebraska is this information: Reis, John F. , 50 born 1860 IN, married once, 19 yrs. Owns and farmer. wife, Anna, 42 born 1868 IL, married once, 19 yrs. two children, one living. daughter, Goldie, 9 was born 1901 in NE. adopted son, Gordon M. 14 born 1896 in KS, parents birth places unknown. I never found John in the 1920 Census, but there was one from Crete, Saline Co., Nebraska with a Anna O. Reis and Golden E., and don't know if this was Anna and Goldie. Researcher Barbara Schwartz also found Goldie Reis had graduated from Wayne State Normal School, Nebraska School of Business with the class of 1920, and was on the commercial teaching staff. It was reported Oct. 3, 1926 that Miss Goldie Reis, former instructor in the commercial department, was married the latter part of August to Leslie S. Smith. Miss Reis was for several years in the service of a trust company in Omaha. June 11, 1953 Mrs. Goldie Reis Smith was at the Sharp reunion in Bethany Park and was the secretary-treasurer. In 1940 Leslie S, Goldie E, Marilyn A. & Geraldine E. were living in Omaha, Ne. Also found was that a Gordon Reis had sold heifers and steers at the Omaha Stock Market in 1963. Geraldine Elizabeth Smith Eade obituary has her parents as Leslie S. and Goldie Reis Smith. The short obituary tells little about his life, but we know he was a farmer for most of it, the search continues. LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR (Lincoln, Nebraska) Thursday, March 16, 1922. Main Edition. Page 12. REIS- John F. Reis died at 10:15 a. m. Thursday at the home, 106 West Twenty-second street, University Place. He was sixty-two years old. He is survived by his wife, Anna Owen Reis and a daughter. The body is being held at the Henry R. Brown chapel pending funeral arrangements. LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR (Lincoln, Nebraska) Saturday March 18, 1922. Page 7. REIS- John F. Short funeral services will be conducted from the home, 106 West Twenty-second street, University Place, at 4 p.m. Saturday. Rev. James Brown will officiate.
