John Frazee, one of our most excellent men and honored citizens had passed away at the old homestead north of Bassett, where lives his son John D., on Wednesday morning at 1:45 o'clock. Death was due to a stroke of paralysis which he suffered on Monday after dinner. He had been visiting at his daughters and returned that noon to his son's home apparently in his usual health and had gone to his room to change his clothes. His son's wife heard an unusual groan and upon opening his door found him lying on the floor. She summoned her husband from the barn and they placed him on the bed. He said he was sick all over but thought he would be all right in a few minutes. He rolled himself over and with one hand straightened out the fingers of the other. His daughter-in-law summoned the doctor. They talked a few words with him, but in ten minutes he could say nothing and he sank into a paralytic sleep and life gradually ebbed away and his soul took its flight heavenward. His funeral was held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the Congregational Church in Bassett and the services were conducted by the Universalist Minister from Osage, to which faith he belonged. Burial was made at the Beckwith cemetery a mile east of Niles where lie buried his faithful wife and three children, his parents and others dear to him. The deceased, Hon. John Frazee was born in Owen Township, Clinton County, Indiana, February 5, 1841, the second son and youngest of four children of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Frazee. When he was 10 years of age he came with his parents to Clinton, Iowa, and one year later to Chickasaw County settling on the old homestead in Chickasaw County, where he made his home through the remainder of his life. In 1865, he was married to Miss Cyrena Beckwith, a native of New York state. To them six children were born, three of whom with their mother have passed to the beyond. Those living are Mrs. Glencora E. Tolle, Mrs. Lenora J. Waidelech and John D. Frazee. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Nancy J. Campbell of Fairfield, Nebraska and Mrs. Elizabeth Jarrad of Independence, Missouri, neither of which were able to attend the funeral. These with 13 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and other relatives and warm friends mourn his death. Hon. John Frazee was indeed a man among men. Many a citizen can say with truth, "He was my friend, faithful and true." As a boy he endured with patience with his father's family the hardship of pioneer life. Schools they had few but of such as offered he made the best use. He was also a student of the Fayette University. He taught school later and during his life has held many places of honor and trust placed in him by his community, his township and county. This county elected him Representative to the 25th and 26th General Assembly and in that body he served with dignity and honor to himself and great credit to his constituents. He was a lovable man and one of the best old gentleman we have ever known. We have never heard any man speak ill of him and in his death his county has lost one of its most illustrious citizens. Men came from distant points to pay a last tribute to a departed friend and mourn at the bier where lay the remains of one of who all will say, "He was a man, every inch a man, and with heavy heart we give him back to earth from whence he came." Sympathy is extended to the children, sisters, and all his relatives and friends. May his life be a beacon light which shall act as a guide for them and all who knew him.
