Here the limit set by the creator has been realized with bygots and hopes and aspirations achieved or abandoned. He was honorably known in this community for 22 years. His old friends must comfort themselves what thoughts of his full rounded years and his hopes grounded in immortality. Any more that was for purifying or bettering the community was hailed by him as an opportunity for good. He was an inveterate foe to the rum curse. John H. Bruce was born at Paddy's Garden, Davies County, Indiana September 23, 1831, died at Dedham, Iowa, July 13, 1903, aged 71 years, 9 months and 20 days. He was a resident of Illinois for 10 years, settling up Buffalo Grove in 1849. In 1859 he removed with his family to Iowa, residing in the counties of Keokuk, Cass, Audubon, and Carroll. To Carroll he came in 1882 where is since made his home. He was united in marriage to Miss Flora Danielson of Polo, Illinois, March 2, 1858. To them were born five children, all of whom are living J.B. Bruce, Harry W. Bruce, Mrs S. F. Border, Squire W. Bruce, and Chas. D. Bruce. At the age of 17 he confessed christ and joined the Christian church at Bruceville, Indiana. In 1896 he renewed his Covenant with God and united with the Christian church at Coon Rapids. He read much from God's Book and believed its promises. As the end drew near, the entire family was called around his chair for family worship, wife and children and grandchildren participated in the sacred hour. It brought untold joy to him. Again and again he did express himself in the exclamation of "glory! glory!" and his testimony leaves a triumphant Christian ring. How precious are the promises of Jesus. Why should our tears in sorrow flow, when God recalls his own, and bids them leave a world of woe for an immortal crown.
