"Jack" McHale, 80, of Brunsville died Friday, March 15, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville, with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by American Legion Heeren-McHale-Wilken Post 724 of Brunsville, will be in St. Peter Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. John Harold McHale was born Aug. 15, 1921, at the family home in Brunsville, the son of J.O. "Jesse" and Katheryn (Rieken) McHale. He received his education at the Brunsville Independent School. He served three years with the Civilian Conservation Corp during the early 1930s. While in the C.C.C. he worked construction in Whiting, Iowa. He served his country in the U.S. Army from June 11, 1942, to Nov. 18, 1945. While in the Army, he received five major ribbons, including a ribbon for the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Following his discharge , he returned to Brunsville and was united in marriage to Marian Hanstein on Nov. 29, 1945. She died in May 1993. He had worked at the Bruns Tavern and later managed Sheehan Produce Company in Akron, Iowa, for several years. In the early 1970s, he was named manager of the Farmers Coop Elevator in Akron. He had managed the elevator until his retirement in the early 1980s. During his retirement he enjoyed playing cards with his friends at the Legion Hall in Brunsville. He was a member of the Legion Post for 56 years. He was one of the founding members of the post and served as commander and in several other positions within the organization. He had also been active with the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include two sons and their wives, John L. "Jack" and Celine McHale of Omaha, and Steve and Glenda McHale of Brunsville; a sister, Kathryn "Cussy" Jeffers of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Julianne, Diana, Dustin and Corey McHale; very close friends, Alvin Willer, and Gene and Sheryl Dickman, all of Brunsville; a sister-in-law, Arlene McHale of Craig, Iowa; a brother-in-law and his wife, Ron and Marlene Hanstein of Craig; an aunt, Viola Reiken of Seney, Iowa; and many other friends and relatives. He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bernard and William McHale; a sister, Marjorie Klemme-Hopkins; and two brothers-in-law, Jeff Jeffers and Arnold Klemme. Pallbearers will be Steve Dickman, Kent Hanstein, Greg Liston, Jimmy Klemme, Jeffrey Jeffers and Dennis McHale. Honorary pallbearers will be Alvin Willer, Gene Dickman, Erv Renken, Wayne Brown, Art Pahl and Greg Schlichte.
