Howell, born in Canada Mother - Amelia Whiting, born in Michigan John Henry Howell appears on the 1910 census with his mother, Amelia Gardner and her husband of 16 years - Benedict Gardner. Have not found any of the above names on the 1900 census. Although appearing under the surname of HOWELL on the 1910 census John appears to have to have taken the surname of his step-father after this time appearing under the Gardner name on subsequent census records as well as war- time registration. It is likely that his mother remarried to Gardner about 1894 but it is not known whether the Howell marriage resulted in divorce or death for the husband. The 1910 census indicates it is the second marriage for both parties. OBIT -October 25, 1958 John H. Gardner, 69, of 909 East State Street in St. Johns, died Saturday at Clinton Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gardner was born Jan. 19, 1889 in Port Huron and lived in Lansing before moving to St. Johns in 1934. He married Elsie O. Twichell of Lansing on Mar. 21, 1915. Surviving him are his wife, one son, William L. of Skandia, and eight daughters: Mrs. Esther Twichell of Eaton Rapids, Mrs. Annabelle Ness of Lansing, Mrs. Betty Ladiski of Ovid, Mrs. Geraldine Farrier of St. Johns, Mrs. Belva Fidler of Kalamazoo, Mrs. Luella Walling of St. Johns, Mrs. Shirley Taylor of DeWitt and Mrs. Gladys Church of Ososso. Mr. Gardner's mother, Mrs. Amelia Gardner, of St. Johns, also survives him, along with 30 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns with Rev. Leonard J. Clements officiating. Burial will be in Dimondale Cemetery.
