McMillen was born April 11,1865, on a farm in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the son of James and Nancy (McNaughten) McMillen. He attended the Hesper public school. On Sept. 3, 1884, he married Johanna Vongraven of Alamakee County. For a period of 40 years, he was engaged in farming in Hesper Township, also operating one of the community's first threshing outfits in the days of steam power. He engaged in raising purebred hogs and imported Belgian horses, making a trip to Europe for these horses himself. Later he was engaged in road construction, and built the present road between Mabel and Hesper in 1922. He operated the Golden Rule Cafe here in 1929 and then operated grocery stores at Prosper, Canton and Hesper. For the past 11 years he had operated the present business at Mabel. Survivors are five sons, Charles, Ralph and Leland, Mabel, and Jesse and Philip, Hesper; two daughters, Mrs. Harvey (Flora) Kelts, Consort, Alberta, Canada, and Mrs. Milford (Ruby) Johnson, Canton; 23 grandchildren; 39 great- grandchildren and 2 great-great- grandchildren.
