Read More	The Afton Enterprise Sept. 22, 1892 JOHN ICKIS The death of John Ickis who has been sick for some time, occurred on Sunday, Sept. 18, 1892 and with the announcement of his demise, the people of Union county were called upon to mourn the loss of an honored citizen--a man who had done much for the improvement of the county and who had lived to see his children grow into honored and respected citizens. John Ickis was born near Tawneytown, Md., Oct. 8, 1801; moved with his parents to Mahoning county Ohio, in 1802, where he remained till manhood. He was married to Rachel Hamilton, Aug. 28, 1823. They came to Iowa April 18, 1852 and settled near Keokuk in Lee county. They came to Union county in November 1854 and settled southwest of the present town of Afton. They resided on the farm many years but finally moved to this city to pass their remaining years in quiet. John Ickis was a man universally loved and venerated. He was a man of upright character, stern in his ideas of right and rigid in their observance. He was raised in the Lutheran church and was a member of that denomination; was a professing Christian to the day of his death, though he did not united with the church in Afton, as did his wife who preceded him to the Christian's Home only last January. The funeral services of this aged citizen were held at the Presbyterian church in Afton on Tuesday, September 20, 1892 at 8 p.m. conducted by the Rev. and Venerable G. J. Nixon, assisted by the Rev. A. H. Collins, pastor of the M. E. church and the Rev. F. L. Goff, pastor of the Presbyterian church. A large number of citizens were present from Afton, Creston and the country, including many of the early friends of the family. The burial took place at the Afton cemetery and these services were in charge of the Revs. Nixon and Goff. The floral offerings consisted in a wreath of white flowers and a sheaf of ripened wheat. Thus closes a long and useful life.
