Rachel (Hamilton) Ickis died at her home at Afton, January 18, 1892 in the 90th year of her age. The deceased was a grand-daughter of the Duke of Hamilton, of Scotland, being the daughter of Duke's second son, who was one of the pioneers in settling the then colony of Pennsylvania, where he held several important official positions and at the time of his death was Grand Master of the Masonic lodge of the state. The deceased was born in Beaver county Pa., Dec. 5th 1802 and was married to her husband, John Ickis, in Mahoning county, Ohio, Aug. 28, 1822. The family removed to Iowa in 1852, and settled in Lee county, from whence they moved to Union county in 1854, settling some three miles southwest of Afton on land which Mr. Ickis purchased of the government. For many years they resided there, making their home one of the most attractive and their farm one of the most productive of any in Union county. Six children have grown to man and womanhood, some of whom are well known in Union county. The deceased was the mother of Jonathan Ickis, who, for several years was county treasurer of this county, of A. F. Ickis of Highland, who has held many important official positions, of G. O. Ickis, also of Highland township, who for several years was deputy sheriff, and of O. U. Ickis, who now resides in Washington, where he has long been connected with the pension department. A son and daughter, also reside in Ohio. Mrs. Ickis was an exemplary woman. She was one of those genial, hospitable, motherly women whom to know was to love, honor and respect. From childhood up the writer has known her, and for many years had seen her almost daily, and on all occasions and under all circumstances she was the same cheerful woman with a kind word and willing hand, ever ready to encourage and help her neighbors and friends and extend to the needy the most bountiful charity. A few years ago Mr. and Mrs. Ickis gave up their farm home and moved to Afton where they expected to spend the remainder of their days and where she died after a brief illness from pneumonia, and on Wednesday of last week was laid in the Afton cemetery where she sleeps the sweet sleep of death. For nearly 69 years she and her devoted husband, who is one year her senior, and who survives her, have traveled over life's pathway together reaching a ripe old age that exceeds by a score of years the allotted time for man. To the surviving husband and family will go out the sympathy of the entire community, but death, that is only another name for a new birth into another sphere of life, has no terrors for such as Grandma Ickis. After a long and useful life on earth she has passed beyond the veil to enter a brighter, more beautiful and glorious life.
